Paul McCartney to reveal his "Amoeba's Secret" Jan. 27 on CD

Order Paul McCartney "Amoeba's Secret" CD from Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.ca (Canada).

Update (1/27/09)
  • The Paul McCartney "Amoeba's Secret" CD was released Tuesday. Amoeba Records, where it all happened, has pictures and video from the 2007 show. Notice, too, the graphic on our Examiner.com column that they sent us which includes the original poster for the show and the cover of the CD.

    Update (1/22/09)

  • The "Amoeba's Secret" CD was finally officially announced Tuesday in a press release. (We told you about it first here all the way back on Jan. 7, then here and here. And thanks to my ex-cubicle neighbor SF Radio Examiner Brad Kava for passing it along.) The press release finally says in black-and-white what the word has been all along: The CD will only mimic the vinyl. Get this, though: Mike Ray, afternoon DJ on KPFX-FM in Fargo, N.D., tells us rock radio stations were sent the same 4 track CD that being released next week back in June 2007. And with the fact the entire show was aired on the radio, we keep wondering why they're just putting out the four tracks? Oh well, here's Amoeba's web page with video of the show.

    Update (1/10/09)
  • Thanks to Jim Henderson at Amoeba Records in Los Angeles, where the McCartney Amoeba show was held, we can give you some details on the "Amoeba's Secret" CD. that Amazon.com lists as hitting the street Jan. 27, just before the Grammys. Henderson told us the CD tracks will be the same as the vinyl EP -- "Only Mama Knows," "C Moon," "That Was Me" and "I Saw Her Standing There." The bonus tracks from the show used on the "Ever Present Past" CD and vinyl singles will not be on the CD, Henderson said. The artwork will also be the same as the EP, he told us. Two of the tracks are nominated for Grammys -- "That Was Me" for Best Pop Male Vocal Performance and "I Saw Her Standing There" for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance. The Grammy Awards will take place Feb. 8.

(1/8/2009) Paul McCartney's "Amoeba Secret," the vinyl EP recording of his live show at Los Angeles' Amoeba Records on June 27, 2007, that's nominated for two Grammy Awards, is quietly coming out on CD Jan. 27, according to a listing at Amazon.com and other online retailers. That's just in time for the Grammy Awards show Feb. 8, likely the only reason this is coming to CD at all.

The Grammy nominees from the disc are "That Was Me" for Best Pop Male Vocal Performance and "I Saw Her Standing There" for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance. Those two tracks comprise half of what was on the original vinyl EP release -- "Only Mama Knows" and "C Moon" were also on it.

One listing we saw said the CD will contain just the four tracks of the vinyl, though two other tracks from the show, "House of Wax" and "Dance Tonight," were added to the vinyl and CD single releases, respectively, of "Ever Present Past" from the album "Memory Almost Full." Here's an idea: Why not release the whole show? We wonder how many people bought up the vinyl thinking that was the only way they'd be able to get these tracks. Indeed, we saw several listings still online for the vinyl EP that specifically said the tracks would never come out on CD or digitally. Never say never.

  • And those feisty folks at NRK haven't given up. They stopped podcasting the Beatles, but now they're airing the McCartney Amoeba's Secret concert. And we're not talking the tracks on the EP, but the whole thing. (Thanks to Roger Stormo.)
