Advertiser uses "From Me To You" in first major British ad to feature a Beatle song

Update (12/9/08)
  • John Lewis has released their ad remix of "From Me To You" for download, reports BrandRepublic.com. Their website says, "You've probably recognised the soundtrack from the ad, the 1963 Lennon & McCartney song "From Me to You", which was the Beatles' first number one in every published music chart. It seemed very appropriate for the theme of the campaign, though we've re-recorded it to give it new twist. Among the singers is Matt Spinner, a John Lewis Partner and a member of our Music Society. Download an extended version of the music track for free! We now have an extended version of the track, which is a re-recording of the Lennon and McCartney song “From me to you” and is based on the 60 second TV version. It runs at 2mins 7” and features even more singers from the John Lewis Music Society. We are giving away a limited amount of free downloads and in return, are asking customers to donate to our registered charity of the year, Wallace & Gromit’s Children’s Foundation." You can download the track here. Donations can be made here.

  • British advertiser John Lewis has licensed "From Me To You" for its new Christmas ad spot, , said to be the first major British advertiser ever to use a Beatle song, reports Brand Republic News, Macworld and LDPbusiness.

"I had been worried that Beatles songs would be priced out of the market, but was pleasantly surprised that this was not the case," Tom Nester-Smith, the client services director at Lowe London, which created the ad, told Brand Republic News. "We didn't set out to specifically create an ad based around a Beatles song, but we found that the lyrics summed up the ad's message that a present's value is in its appropriateness, rather than its price."

Sony/ATV, which holds the copyrights to the songs of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, say it's the first time a Beatle song has been used by a major British advertiser.

(Comment: It's actually a cute little ad, though hearing Beatle songs used commercially is still a bit unsettling.)
