George's interview was witty and charming. It was also one of the last extended interviews he did. You can find the interview on our site and on Undercover's.
We asked Cashmere to talk about the interview. He sent us these comments:
Hi there Steve,The interview would have been in July 1992. George had just released the "Made In Japan" album and decided to do some interviews. I was offered the one for Australia.
The interview was to be a phone. George would call me. It was scheduled for 10 p.m. Australian time which was mid morning UK. George rang through, eventually, about an hour and a half late.
It was a rather bizarre experience. I answered the phone and in his recognisable English accent said “Oh hello, my name is George Harrison. I am calling from London, England to speak to Paul Cashmere." I was told I could talk to him for 20 minutes. We spoke for 50 minutes.
He was incredibly open in his answers, often funny in his responses and, at times, brutally honest in some private matters. I think he probably said more in that interview that what was known in many years prior.
You will notice the comment about "Something" being written with Ray Charles in his head, not Pattie. On the night he died, I was watching FOX News. Neil Cavuto was interviewing a “Beatles expert” and said, “Now the song Something was actually written about Ray Charles” and the expert laughed it off and said “Don’t be silly, it was written about Pattie.” I guess the “expert” hadn’t seen the interview.
