We heard from the festival, which said, in reply to our request to lineup questions, "We have no information to report at this time."
However, Alex Young of the Consequence of Sound blog, which originated the report that McCartney will play there, told us, "First off, I would like to note that while we are fairly confident in what we list on our Festival Outlook, until the festival in question officially announced, nothing is 100% confirmed. That being said, we received a tip on McCartney from a person with knowledge of the lineup. This same person previously tipped us off on The Killers and Franz Ferdinand, both of which appear strong bets to perform. In fact, The Killers are already confirmed by their label. I guess we'll know for sure come Tuesday, but I still have confidence in McCartney appearing." We'll send you to our earlier report from an official McCartney source that put doubts on it. I guess we'll find out Tuesday, though if anything else comes up, we'll let you know.
Update (1/24/09)
Is the Paul McCartney Coachella Valley Music and Arts Fair gig just a rumor and nothing more? We wondered about this already and last night sent an email to Paul McCartney's press rep in the UK asking if the news that was being reported was accurate. Here was his reply that came Friday: "Not accurate to my knowledge." We sent a note to the festival, but heard nothing from them as of yet. That's not completely unexpected. Any publicity, especially about associating someone like Paul McCartney to your event, is good publicity from the festival's point of view. But the "proof" that this is happening at all has been shaky from the outset. Don't pack your bags.
(1/23/2009) When you do have a unconfirmed confirmed report? Try this: A report on the Consequence of Sound blog lists Paul McCartney as "confirmed" for the lineup at the 2009 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, CA. April 17-19. A post on the Coachella Message Board by romeo and marvin agrees somewhat: "paul is confirmed…they announced it on kroq…or they are going to ... ". This year's lineup hasn't been officially announced yet on their website. (It still has last year's.)
