Update (9/5/04)
  • The official annoucement of Paul's taking questions about Glastonbury, sent by Paul's website:

ASK PAUL MCCARTNEY JUST WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO PLAY THE GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL!

Over here on Paul’s official site we have just launched the first of many www.paulmccartney.com features. This first one is on Paul's historic show at Glastonbury last June. You can now quiz Paul about what his experience was like and how it compared to other career highlights, plus view pictures and clips from the show and vote for your favourite songs that you want to see in full on paulmccartney.com.

The best 20 questions submitted will be selected and then answered by Paul. There will be an exclusive prize for the best question as chosen by Paul. Paul’s Glastonbury Q&A is brought to you in collaboration with www.uncut.co.uk and www.nme.co.uk

  • Liam Gallagher of Oasis was prevented from chatting with Paul by the security force at Glastonbury, reports Ireland Online.
  • Paul performed a new song, a ballad that doesn't sound too far removed from other ballads he's done recently. A guess at the title is "Follow Me."

    Update (6/29/04)

  • From Darren L.:

Just read News Briefs about the Macca Glastonbury BBC broadcasts and was really fed up to read that I'd missed a lot of the show on BBC2 as I was watching BBC3's coverage. But...BBC3's coverage included only 2 songs..Penny Lane & Hey Jude. So in order to have seen the whole thing I'd have needed 2 TV's on at the same time anyway!:-) Anyway, thought you'd like to know the other songs broadcast. Love your site.

  • Paul paid a moving tribute to George and John during his Glastonbury show, reports NME.com
  • Added fan reviews of Paris and Glastonbury.
  • From Peter Fitzpatrick, a note about Glastonbury:

Listening to a lot of coverage on Radio and TV before this weekend's Glastonbury Festival. It is being said that Paul is going to do some songs with Oasis... who of course have a certain Zak Starkey playing for them. This is speculation of course but would be in keeping with the vibe of this great music festival.

That should be a nice buzz for the Gallagher brothers who have built a nice career writing Beatle-esque songs - not that there's anything wrong with that and at least they give the Fabs full credit.

BBCTV and Radio do extensive coverage of this festival and it should be possible to hear a lot of the performers by listening to one of the BBC radio stations online. 6Music is covering a lot of the festival and are streamed online :

    Update (6/21/04)
  • From Matt Hurwitz:

    Hi, Steve--

I just spoke with Rusty Anderson, who told me a little about the show they performed in St. Petersburg, Russia. He said that during the concert's pre-show, it was raining quite heavily - but the clouds broke up just before the concert itself began! Also, though Russian President Putin was not able to attend this time around, he did call Paul personally to congratulate him on the show. He also noted that the concert was filmed (as has, I believe, the rest of the tour) by "Back in the U.S." video director Mark Haefeli. Matt

Hi! My website The Magical Beatle Tours at http://home.tiscali.se/magicalbeatletours/ has now been updated with 'The Night Before'. You're right!! On near 50 beautiful pictures you can visit the fantastic evening at Restaurant Tradgar'n in Gothenburg, Sweden last Friday, June 11th. The world-famous Beatle band Lenny Pane had brought together lots of guests to celebrate Paul McCartney's concert at Ullevi Stadium on Saturday on June 12th. All in co-operation with Beatles Information Center. The first sensational guest was none other than Rusty Anderson, guitarist in Paul McCartney's own band! He signed his CD, and also made an exclusive concert for us. The other guests was also really good, including many famous artists from Sweden, like Triple & Touch, Gladys del Pilar, Peter Ekberg, Johan Lagerstrom, Jack Mittleman, Iris, Wille Crafoord and Jim Jidhed. We got a wonderful night with lots of great music!

    Enjoy!

    Hi there, Steve,

I have put out a little photo gallery with a bunch of pics I took at Paul's concerts in Horsens in Denmark. Two great concerts by the way! Only the first picture is from June 8th (where I was in 2nd row - almost impossible to take photos from here because of the very alert stage security crew). The rest of the photos is from 9th June in 10th row where it was possible to take more pics without getting caught.

    All the best

  • From João Paulo Petersen:

    Hi, Steve,

Update news: TV Globo in Brazil recorded Paul McCartney show in Lisboa, but it transmitted only three songs: "Get Back", "She's A Woman" and "Live And Let Die" yesterday, Sunday night, May 30th. TV Globo would transmit these parts a day before, however the organizers of Rock In Rio Lisboa didn't authorize the transmmission on Saturday, May 29th.

  • This UOL Brazilian page has pics of Paul and other acts (in thumbnail size that can be enlarged) from the Lisbon show. (Thanks to João Paulo Petersen.)

Update (5/30/04) Our first fan review (and it's a long one), this of the Lisbon show from Ernesto Cruz.
  • This pre-tour interview with the BBC includes audio clips
  • The Brazilian website UOL features some pics of Paul show in Lisboa. (Thanks to João Paulo Petersen.)
  • More pics from the Lisboa show. (Thanks to João Paulo Petersen.)
  • João Paulo Petersen also tells us that the Brazilian newspaper "O Globo" reported that around 50.000 people attended the performance at Parque Bela Vista in Lisboa.
  • Claudio Dirani tells us the magazine Correio Da Manhã will publish a big interview with Paul, but it won't be online. The magazine does have this article, though it appears to be an advance and not a review.
  • João Paulo Petersen tells us that Portugese station RFM Online and indeed they transmmited few snips of Paul McCartney show in Lisboa. He also said that "news published in several newspapers said that Paul McCartney didn't want to use in his show in Lisboa the logotype of Rock In Rio Lisboa, which stay in the ceiling of the stage. A black cloth covered the logotype. The advertises of the companies which help to promote the festival also were covered. The organizers respected Paul's desire. He wishes this show be only more a show in his career and not be seen as a special event."
  • From James O'Shannessy:

    Dear Steve,

Just to let Australian Beatle Fans know that in the Weekend Australian there is a good supplement on the Beatles Australian Tour circa 1964, in recognition of its 40th anniversery. Its even has an up-to-date picture of Jimmy Nicol and his house which is quite surprising. Also in regards to the 40th anniversary, whoever is the Australian distributor for the catologue is using it as a selling tool and they are reducing all the CDs including Live at the BBC in recognition of the anniversary as well.
Thanks for the great site .

  • From Paul McCartney.com:

Paul McCartney’s 04 Summer Tour kicked off in spectacular fashion this week with an unforgettable show at Gijon’s El Molinon Stadium on Tuesday night. The frenzied and passionate Spanish crowd were treated to a set by Paul and his band which included huge hits, fan favourites and rarely played gems from the whole of McCartney’s career.

The classics, Let It Be, Maybe I’m Amazed, Jet, Band On The Run and Yesterday rubbed shoulders with delightful suprises including Helter Skelter, I've Got a Feeling and Flaming Pie, plus crackling live outings of Drive My Car, Penny Lane and even a cover of George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass. As reported on Paul’s official site the show made several national and local newspapers the very next day and even jammed the local mobile phone network as fans at the show attempted to relay the atmosphere and performance to those who missed out – system overload!

The full tracklisting can be found in the news section at www.paulmccartney.com (Editor's note...also below in the 5/28/04 update), plus keep checking back for exclusive images from each city Paul rocks on the 04 Summer Tour! Next stop is tonight at the Parque Bela Vista in Lisbon – brace yourself Portugal…

  • Here's a translation by Fernando Luna of the interview we linked to that Paul did prior to the tour.
    Update (5/28/04)
  • Here's the set list from the Gijon show, as listed on Paul's website:

Jet, Got To Get You Into My Life, Flaming Pie, All My Loving, Let Me Roll It, You Won't See Me, She's a Woman, Maybe I'm Amazed, The Long and Winding Road, In Spite of All the Danger (!), Blackbird, We Can Work It Out, Here Today, All Things Must Pass, I'll Follow the Sun, For No One, Calico Skies, I've Just Seen A Face, Eleanor Rigby, Drive My Car, Penny Lane, Get Back, Band on the Run, Back in the USSR, Live and Let Die, I've Got a Feeling, Lady Madonna, Hey Jude. First encore: Yesterday, Let It Be, I Saw Her Standing There. Second encore: Helter Skelter (!), Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. (Thanks to Konstantin Galybin.) (Chas Carey tells us he repeated I'll Follow the Sun after For No One because the first version was too short.)

  • On Paul's website, it is reported that the cell phone network went down because there were too many calls at the same time. They were all talking during the show? Don't think so...

    NOTE: TRANSLATION IS NOT MINE
    Claudio
Quote: Rock in Rio-Lisboa to be broadcasted in more than 40 countries The images from Rock in Rio-Lisboa will be transmitted to more than 45 countries via several television channels. Rock in Rio-Lisboa will be seen by over a billion viewers via several television channels that purchased the broadcasting rights of the world's biggest music event. The interest demonstrated by the viewers in what concerns Rock in Rio-Lisboa led these channel's responsible teams to assure that the best moments of the festival will reach the entire world. The audience is guaranteed for the channels that purchased these broadcasting rights and that presently lead the audiences rate in those countries where they are present, including CBS (USA), NTV (Japan) and Channel 4 (United Kingdom). All the channels that purchased the broadcasting rights will offer to the viewers images of Rock in Rio-Lisboa, via daily programs lasting 1 or 2 hours, as well as via some special programs all along the Summer. Portugal and Brazil are the only countries broadcasting live from Rock in Rio-Lisboa. This is, doubtlessly, the most important television coverage that ever took place regarding this type of event. Until the opening of the festival's doors there is enough time to enlarge this list with more television stations, so you must come back again to read everything updated. Australia also joined this set, with transmissions via Nine, TV leader that will present two daily programs lasting 1 hour each one. In Australia, Rock in Rio-Lisboa will also be broadcasted by Channel V (with some daily special programs covering the six days of the event). This is, until now, the available list. However, new agreements are being signed every day. Update (5/10/04)

  • Paul is rehearsing for the upcoming tour in the huge Millennium Dome in London, reports IC Liverpool.

In addition, there's this update from paulmccartney.com and how fans were looking for the rehearsal venue:

Paul McCartney’s “04 Summer Tour”, set to launch on May 25th in Gijon, Spain, has entered rehearsals and as scores of fans scour known rehearsal halls in England some have even taken to checking out airline hangers. “I’ve heard that the equipment for the tour is massive, so my friends and I decided to check out some of the abandoned airline hangers at some of the private airstrips,” said one fan. “But, they weren’t there yet. I reckon that we’ll try again in a few days.”

From the sound of things checking in an airline hanger might not be a bad idea. Insiders have confirmed that “04 Summer Tour” can boast the largest outdoor video system EVER, nearly 80,000 pounds of equipment. The colossal concert production is sure to be loud, so those looking for the rehearsal site shou ld listen for it – 75 speakers boast more then 75,000 watts of power. There are pyrotechnics and a massive stage set, which will use 18 production rigs to carry from gig to gig.

Macca’s “04 Summer Tour” is set to play 14 dates throughout Europe, 7 first-time performance visits as well as 5 concerts in cities that haven’t rocked with him since 1989’s “Get Back World Tour” or 1993’s “New World Tour”. Tour dates include Gijon, Lisbon, Madrid, Zurich, Leipzig, Prague, Horsens, Gothenburg, Oslo, Helsinki, St. Petersburg, Paris and Glastonbury.

    Update (4/9/04)
  • This article from the Prague Post indicates that T-Mobile Park, that was booked as the original site of the Prague show, has yet to be built! (Thanks very much to Barb Siler.)

    Update (4/8/04)

  • From Ludek Macura:

    Hello Steve,

I am sending you a little explanation on the concert in Prague. Municipal disapproval of the concert venue in Chodov was behind the venue change in Prague. The new location Kolbenova Park is closer to the center and situated in Prague 9 - Vysocany (100 m from the metro B station "Kolbenova"). The organizers assure that purchased tickets with the former venue (T-Mobile Park, Chodov) are valid. Cathegories and seats quality is conserved. Attendance of 60.000 people is expected.

Here is a list of Prague hotels offering special prices for accommodation with 2 tickets :

    Update (3/26/04)
  • From Ole M. Olsen:

Today's (or actually last Saturday's) news:

As reported in Norway's largest newspaper, VG (http://www.vg.no/pub/vgart.hbs?artid=219991), the Paul McCartney concert in Oslo on the 14th of June seems to turn into a bit of a special night.

Paul (or rather someone in his staff) has discovered that among the audience this night will be audience number 8 million since he went solo. And this member of the audience (or rather, a more or less random member of the audience, I presume) will be picked out by Paul's staff before the show to meet Paul backstage and receive a set of keys to a new car. I wonder if it will be a Volkswagen New Beetle? ;-)

The rest of the audience can look forward to a special night as well, it seems, as Paul indicates that at this particular show he will play a number of Beatles songs he has never performed before (presumably not even on the rest of the tour).

He says he doesn't know yet exactly which songs that will be, but that it will be songs from the period after the Beatles stopped touring. I had a look through my records, and if memory serves, these are the songs from Sgt. Pepper and onwards that Paul has never performed live (I know a lot of people will correct me if I'm wrong):

    * Fixing A Hole * When I'm Sixty-Four (but he's likely to wait a couple of years to peeform that one, don't you think?) * Lovely Rita * Your Mother Should Know * Wild Honey Pie (but what's the point? :-) * Martha My Dear * Rocky Raccoon * Why Don't We Do It In The Road? * I Will * Helter Skelter * Honey Pie * All Together Now * Maxwell's Silver Hammer * Oh! Darling * She Came In Through The Bathroom Window * I've Got A Feeling

Some seem more likely than others. :-) Personally, as a big fan of his solo stuff as well, I wouldn't mind hearing some of the Wings and solo stuff he seldom plays. But I guess that's less likely. Paul seems to put effort into giving the audience "Beatles value for money" these days. And I'm sure that's what the majority of the audience wants, so...

A splendid time is guaranteed for all in any case!

    Ole

P.S. Though, of course, I feel certain that _I_ will be the lucky person picked out to meet Paul and get a new car, my friend has said that if he's picked out, he'll take the car and let ME meet Paul. ;-)

    Update (3/11/04)

  • From Sebastian Deutschmann:

With regards to Paul's tour, the Leipzig show seems to be sold out officially. But www.ventic.de sells tickets for Prague and Leipzig from € 78,- to € 155,-.

At www.ebay.de ( http://search.ebay.de/search/search.dll?MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&shortcut=4&query=paul+mccartney&Category0=8529 ) a lot of costly Leipzig tickets are available. Glad I saw him last year - in the driving rain.

    Update (3/10/04)
  • From Illka in Finland:

    Hi, Steve:

Hello from Finland! It´s been awhile...

Paul will play in the Helsinki Olympic Stadium in 17th June. The ticket sale will start here on next Monday, 15th March. The stadium has room for an audience of 43 000 people. Ticket prizes are about normal: from 65 to 79 euros. The Stones were more expensive last summer.

I hope, and believe, that Macca will get a full house. It´s been so long time we have seen Him here in Finland. The last time he played live in Finland was with the Wings in summer 1972, 32 years ago! And the sad truth behind all this is that the Fab Four never played in our country.

The next day after the Helsinki concert will be Paul´s 62th birthday. I look forward to see if he plays "Birthday" (from the White album) here the night before! . And maybe he stays here to party? Or perhaps it´s more possible that he flies home to celebrate with his family?

In theory we may have another concert here. The Finnish promotor said that he tries to book Paul for 16th June also, if the 17th June will sell out. There is a free day in the time table of the tour. You never know...

    all the best!
    from
    Ilkka

    Update (3/9/04)
  • From Sebastian Deutschmann:

    Dear Steve,

For all the Macca-Fans who have the opportunity to see Paul in Germany here's a link for tickets for his show in Leipzig. I bought my tickets for Paul's show in Munich with GET GO last year. They accept credit cards and everything went fine. This will hopefully also help the lad from Holland who wrote that he couldn't get Danish tickets: http://www.getgo.de/cgi-bin/TINFO.DLL?fun=TDETAILA&backdoc=start&backdll=TDoc.dll&doc=detaila&id=gtn&key=128477

Thanks a lot for keeping me updated every day and for your great website!

    Update (3/7/04)
  • The June 8th show has sold out rather quickly: Reports we've gotten say it sold out in anywhere from 8 to 11 minutes. A second show has been added for June 9 and tickets are on sale. (Thanks to Lars Nielsen, Arno Guzek, Hofner, Lennart Jacobsen, Niklas Nilsson, Terkel Nielsen, Kai Gerulis and Keld Thomsen.) Tickets can be purchased on http://www.billetmaskinen.dk and other info is available at http://www.hnt.dk. Kai Gerulis says the Leipzig show sold out after a few hours.

Here's a note from Hofner if you planning to travel for the show:

I want to let you know that I just tried to buy tickets for the Denmark Paul McCartney concert. The concert on the 8 of June was sold out but they told me there will be another one at the 9th. But, they also told me that it is not possible to buy tickets if you have an address outside Denmark (and I live in The Netherlands). I have a VISA but they will not accept it without a telephone number & adress in Denmark which makes me very angry!

Among many of the highlights of '04 Summer Tour are sure to be Macca's return to Russia for a special performance in St. Petersburg's Palace Square, as well as his first-time visits to Lisbon, Leipzig, Prague and Horsens before closing out the all-stadium tour with a special appearance at The Glastonbury Festival.

In addition, Macca is looking forward to performances in Madrid, Gothenburg, Zurich, Oslo and Helsinki, cities that haven't seen him in more then a decade. A return to Paris is also planned for Thursday, June 24th, where McCartney's critically hailed 'Back In The World Tour began last March.

  • Update (2/21/04)
  • Negotiations are ongoing for Paul's concert in St. Petersburg, but no agreements have been reached, reports the St. Petersburg Times (second item).

  • Update (2/17/04)
  • From Niklas Nillson:

According to Swedish paper Aftonbladet McCartney will play in Gothenburg on the 12th of June this year.

    Update (2/16/04)
  • From Mark Johnson in Sweden:

On Feb. 14th, one of the evening newspapers in Gothenburg, Sweden ("GT") announced that Paul would play at Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg on June 12, 2004. The report was not denied by Paul's concert group. I can't find anything on the web that reports this concert, but it was front-page headlines in GT. I will write more if I hear more. Mark Johnson Göteborg, Sweden

    Update (2/13/04)

    Update (2/12/04)
  • A tour seems to be shaping up. Tickets for a June 24 Paris show are listed here. (Thanks to Claudio Dirani.) (Late update: It was listed there when we updated the page, but now the show listing is gone.)
  • From Marco Briones in São Paulo - Brazil:

Today on the TERRA Website some rumours about a possible Macca concert in Rio were mentioned. According to the site, it would take place on May 29 , on Aterro do Flamengo - (Flamengo Beach) in Rio. However , EMI Brasil didn't confirm or deny the rumors. They simply do not know anything about it, but said it might be possible, since they were informed about Coldplay's concerts in Brasil only a month before they actually took place. Let's cross our fingers and hope Macca comes to Brazil again on the next tour , later this year.

    Update (2/11/04)

  • From Carlos André

Brazilian periodical O DIA published about advanced negotiations between Rio de Janeiro City Hall and Paul McCartney. As they published MacCa will play a Gig in Aterro do Flamengo this year for a estimated 500,000 people audience. Cesar Maia, Rio's mayor, is known as a huge Beatles fan.

Some years ago he planned a REUNION concert with the three surviving Beatles in Rio. Recently Maia tried to change the name of a Rio''s legendary rock temple FLYING CIRCUS to homage John Lennon. He was sad when as seeing his projected was rejected and declared "I'll play my Lennon Legend DVD for the thousandth time".

  • And Claudio Dirani:

I'll translate this bit of news that came out on a Brazilian site today:

    www.glamurama.com.br Pão de Açúcar
    > 10/02 - 09:23 - Já é quase certo. Paul McCartney deve mesmo fazer um show no Rio de Janeiro, no dia 29 de maio. Ainda falta fechar alguns detalhezinhos, mas o local da apresentação já está definido: o Aterro do Flamengo, com o Pão de Açúcar de fundo. Pelo sim, pelo não, os fãs do ex-Beatle já reservaram a data na agenda.

Paul McCartney is really due to play a gig in Rio de Janeiro on next May, 29. A few details are yet to be worked on, however, the concert's venue is already confirmed: It's set to be at Aterro do Flamengo, where you can watch the Pão de Açúcar (a traditional Brazilian's sightseeing landmark) in the background. Whether it'll happen or not, Paul McCartney's fans have already marked show's date on their diaries.

    Claudio

    PS: let's hope it's real!

(2/10/04) Is Paul touring again? In addition to the St. Petersburg concert we've written about (see item dated 2/3/04 below), this French site indicates a concert for June 24. Here's a note from Phillipe Colinge:

To my greatest amazement, I read today on the respected French Beatles website yellow-sub.net that a concert by Paul is to take place on 24 June at the Stade de France stadium in Paris... Since I haven't read any official announcement for a tour, or even for a one-off concert, on any website or in anay magazine, do you know what substance we must give to this ?

Actually, there is some sort of official announcement to be found on the ticketnet website here but this is all new and surprising to me, specially considering that Paul has yet to finish his new album, to look after baby Beatrice and after Heather as well.

Comment: To us, as well. We'll see what develops. If anyone hears of any other shows, let us know. (Thanks also to Claudio Dirani.)
(2/3/04) The St. Petersburg Times has a story indicating Paul is planning to play a concert in the St. Petersburg Palace Square. Though there's been no official confirmation from McCartney spokesman Geoff Baker, who said he knew nothing about it, McCartney tour director Barrie Marshall wrote a letter to Russian officials on Paul's behalf. It read, "Paul was very impressed with the city and the culture, and after the wonderful reception he received in Moscow, Paul felt that to play a concert in St. Petersburg would be a great way to finish off his informal visit there last year." The concert is due to take place May 27. (Thanks to Claudio Dirani.)
