But don't let that fool you. The film does have some underlying and very significant elements that will be of great interest to Beatle fans.
"All Together Now" goes behind the scenes and examines the genesis, creation and staging of the "Love" show. It had its roots in 2000 and was initially inspired from an idea by George Harrison and his friendship with Cirque du Soleil's Guy Laliberté. George's enthusiam led him to invite Paul and Ringo to Las Vegas to see a Cirque show, and the idea was born, though it still took until Oct., 2004 for an agreement to be signed.
But going from the idea stage to making it happen in the Beatle world isn't necessarily a trip down Penny Lane.
Neil Aspinall, to whom the film is dedicated, admits in a candid moment something that's been well known but never, to our knowledge, admitted openly -- that decisions on projects by the Beatles brain trust (Paul, Ringo, Yoko and Olivia) must be unanimous or they don't happen. And the film reveals concerns at various points by Olivia Harrison, Yoko Ono, Paul McCartney and Sir George Martin on how the project should happen. You almost feel for the pressure the Cirque performers had to be under in dealing with the concerns of the Beatles and their families.
In addition to the creative elements, the film examines the staging difficulties that the Mirage had to face and includes a look at the show from the point of view of one South African performer, Michael Moloi Tumelo, whose uncertainty, at various points, reflects that of the Beatles in the early stages.
Though most of the DVD is about the show itself, Paul, Ringo and Sir George Martin talk about working with the music. And spruced up clips from "Let It Be" are snipped in every so often as a teaser to what the eventual "Let It Be" DVD might look like.
One of the most fascinating sequences is the breakdown of the "shadows sequence," which features studio audio outtakes that weren't included on the "Love" CD/DVD. Both Paul and Ringo express their love of this segment as making the music even more real.
After various rehearsals attended by various members of the Beatles, the premiere night finally arrives and the Beatles family comes from far and wide to attend. Paul (no Heather footage at all, by the way), Olivia, Dhani, Yoko, Cynthia, Julian, Sean and Sir George are all in the house. The camera pans Paul and Ringo often during the show and Ringo's enthusiasm is especially noticable. In one emotional clip, Dhani Harrison is visibly touched when a huge image of his father is shown on the big screen.
At the end, the Beatles and the rest of the audience applaud widely. The last 15 minutes or so of the DVD concentrates on clips of the finished show. And another treat -- outtakes of "No Reply," different from what was on "Anthology 1" and including studio chatter, are heard over the credits.
Three short special features are included: "Changing the Music," a 22-minute documentary about the decision to rework the original recordings; "Music In the Theatre," a 9-minute short on creating 5.1 surround sound in the theatre; and "Making Love," a 10-minute short about the design of the show. Audio options include 5.1 surround and DTS, in addition to regular stereo.
"All Together Now" pulls back the curtain in front of the Beatles maybe a little better than even the Anthology did. While much of the Anthology documentary was composed of vintage news reels, "All Together Now" has much of a cinema verité quality to it because the bulk of it was shot as it was happening. So the actions of the Beatles and their associates are pretty much real, not scripted. It also reveals the depth of the commitment of finances and resources the Beatles, the Mirage and Cirque du Soleil put out to make this work. You have to give all concerned credit for the time, effort and uniqueness of the idea.
All together, "All Together Now" is a further vote of confidence by the Beatles to the Cirque show. It doesn't rise a whole lot past the level of the typical backstage documentary, but there are certainly enough clips of the show in the DVD to make anyone who hasn't seen it certainly tempted to make the journey to Las Vegas and enough stuff for Beatle fans to enjoy the ride it takes you on.One more thing -- there are no clips of Larry King anywhere in sight!

My wife and I hope to see "Love" someday but I am really most interested in just hearing the music in the theatre, not the circus itself (but that is a whole another story about my childhood experience, or nightmare, with circuses). LOVE ain't the Beatles, it is an effort to make even more money off The Beatles by Paul, Ringo, Yoko and Olivia without having to lift a finger. I can enjoy "LOVE" without knowing the details of how that show came together and being given further proof that Paul, Ringo, Yoko and Olivia are acting like spoilt little rich children with the Beatles' legacy and we fans are greying(and many dying) before any substantive releases are being made.
I saw the movie at the Middlebrook theatre in Ocean township NJ. I saw the last show of the night. There were about 13 of us there. I enjoyed it very much and will buy the CD. The only thing I did not like was the cost of the ticket. It was $20.00.

Hi, I attended a showing of All Together Now in Parsippany, New Jersey USA this evening. About 30 people were there, including a handful of kids. The digital picture was great, and it really suited the handful of artistically composed landscape and aerial shots of buildings, cities, and casinos. You really get inside the heads of the Cirque team, who are not without their individual story arcs and dramas, and George Martin, Paul and Ringo have a lot of screen time. There is really not a single song that is played through its entirety, but I felt the most moving sequence was of George Martin laying down the string section for the Love version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps at Air Studios. After conducting the final note, he sighs "Lovely." Perhaps my favorite spoken line in the film is one of Yoko's, who, after viewing Cirque's proposed sequence for Come Together (which features scantily clad performers in an arguably provocative display) takes the creative director aside and soberly insists that "Come Together is not a sleazy song." So, it is a very family friendly film. Oh, except for when Paul drops an f-bomb as it were, towards the end, whilst describing how good a band the Beatles were. Thanks,
Jackson

Steve, I saw the "All Together Now" documentary on the big screen tonite in Toronto, Canada where it is already playing this week. Any true Beatlefan who can get themselves to a theatre to see this on the big screen should do so. Even if you have already seen the show in Las Vegas, or even if you haven't, you will enjoy this and you'll see a lot of detail on the big screen that I am sure will be diminished on the DVD, when it is released next week. A few others have written in already to comment on the film, so I'll just add what most impressed me. Watching the scenes where Paul shows up to observe a pre-dress rehearsal of the show. The director of the show, Adrian Wills, is a bundle of nerves worrying over how Paul will react to the show at that point, which becomes even more humorous when Yoko and Olivia observe a rehearsal as well and Yoko proceeds to launch into Wills that he has the concept of John's song "Come Together" all wrong and needs to make major adjustments. Wills is seen returning to the theatre with Guy Liberte, the creator of Cirque du Soleil, bemoaning that Yoko hates everything he has done on John's songs. The camera catches priceless glimpses of Paul watching the rehearsal and listening to the mash-ups of the songs with George Martin and you can see in his eyes he is re-living memories of when the songs were first written and recorded in his mind. He even comments to George that the songs started out as little bits of lyrics on backs of envelopes or pieces of paper, and now they have turned into these huge production numbers with Cirque du Soleil. He is now so far removed from his time as a Beatle, that he is, like the rest of us, a different person looking at the Beatle phenomena as an observer rather than as one of its creators. He even comments on this very fact, in a very personal and genuine moment in the film, that he cannot believe he was actually one of The Beatles. Other priceless moments are Giles Martin recounting how proud he is to be George Martin's son and given the opportunity to assist his dad on the soundtrack for the show, something he will treasure the rest of his life. And then there is the opening night, and while the show progresses from one great scene to the next, the camera continually pans to the audience, and you see Paul & Ringo sitting together bouncing around in their seats like little kids, mouthing the words to the song being heard, or Ringo air-drumming through some of his favorite moments. They continually make comments to each other, and you just know they are re-living moments from the Beatles-era that the songs bring back to them. There is the look in Dhani Harrison's face as he listens to his dad's voice sing "Within You & Without You" and Something" and he seems in awe of what he hears. At the conclusion of the show, his look of pride and joy at what he has just seen is a moment to savor as is Olivia Harrison's melancholy comment that hearing George's voice makes it seem he is in the room, alive and well, because his voice seems so real to her. A touching, poignant moment. Seeing all these moments on a big screen just enlarges the experience, which is the way anything about The Beatles should be experienced. So make the effort to see the documentary in a theatre if you can. You won't be disappointed! And if you haven't been to Vegas yet to see the show, this film will make you want to catch the next plane!

As a diehard first-generation Beatles fan, I am one of those who never wanted to see "LOVE". To my mind, The Beatles don't go together with Cirque Du Soleil and Vegas. However, since I was in Liverpool and had a chance to attend the premiere showing which would be attended by Yoko, Olivia, Mike McCartney, and George and Giles Martin, I decided to go.I'm very glad I made that decision because from the first moment, I was completely won over. It didn't hurt that Paul and Ringo are in the movie a lot along with the Martins. The movie recounts how the production was brought about because of George Harrison's friendship with the founder of Cirque. We get to see how it all came to be and the end result.
There were disagreements along the way and it's good to see the input that Paul, Ringo, Olivia and Yoko had although, to me, Yoko was a bit annoying at times. The movie was dedicated to the memory of Neil Aspinall which made it even more touching. If you love The Beatles, you should definitely see this movie. And, for all the other female Paul fans, the close-ups alone of Paul are worth the price of admission, in my opinion. I look forward very much to seeing it again in the theater and to the DVD. It's definitely a keeper.

This one night only event follows well-received film festival screenings across North America, including a sold out opening night U.S. premiere at the Silverdocs Festival in Washington D.C. where the Washington Post observed that "All Together Now" "cuts into the heart of [LOVE]." These screenings precede the October 21 release of "All Together Now" on DVD, which will be marketed and distributed worldwide by EMI Music and available in the U.S. exclusively at Best Buy. "Seeing this documentary on the big screen will truly be a moving experience for the viewer as they witness the creation of the show LOVE," says director Adrian Wills. "The digital cinema projection and amazing 5.1 sound allow us to envelop the audience in the grandiose visual world of Cirque du Soleil and legendary music of The Beatles." Cinema-goers will have the opportunity to enter a sweepstakes with a grand prize that will include a pair of tickets to LOVE(TM) Tapis Rouge(TM), an exclusive behind-the-scenes experience of the show; roundtrip airfare for two within the continental U.S. to Las Vegas, and a three day/two night stay at the Mirage; a copy of every Beatles CD currently in release; and a copy of the "All Together Now" DVD. "All Together Now" has screened at a number of festivals in the U.S. and across Canada in 2008, and accolades have followed. Among them were Rolling Stone's praise of its sweeping visual style and "many insightful interviews." Las Vegas Magazine called "All Together Now" "remarkable" and Variety observed that the film "wowed audiences." The documentary details the story behind the unique partnership between The Beatles and Cirque du Soleil that resulted in the creation and 2006 launch of LOVE, the stage production still playing to packed houses at The Mirage in Las Vegas, and the experimental Beatles soundscape album of the same name which garnered two Grammy Awards for producers Sir George and Giles Martin. The movie is dedicated to the memory of Neil Aspinall, former CEO of Apple Corps and an Executive Producer of the DVD. The director, Adrian Wills, traveled between London, Montreal, and Las Vegas, recording early meetings between the Cirque du Soleil & Apple Corps Ltd. creative teams, as well as filming contributions from Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, along with Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison discussing how The Beatles' music can be used in a different way. Noting the uniqueness of these interactions, Wills explains, "What surprised me the most was how human the whole process was." These early stages of the project were all filmed, as were the first rehearsals at the Mirage Hotel theatre in Las Vegas, which was completely rebuilt with a one-of-a-kind sound system and complex round staging to house the LOVE show. Sir George and Giles Martin, the show's Musical Directors, were involved every step of the way with the remarkable Cirque du Soleil creative team, performers and backroom staff. It wasn't all "plain-sailing" and there has been no attempt to disguise some of the disagreements that took place along the way regarding how some of the songs would be portrayed visually. These creative differences, a necessary part of the overall process of bringing LOVE to its most vibrant life, illustrate the participants' love and respect for the music and vision of The Beatles. The Bigger Picture's partner content is delivered to theatres via satellite wherever possible via AccessIT's 270 site satellite network which reaches 40 states around the U.S. The October 20th screenings of "All Together Now" will take place at digitally equipped cinemas across the country. Before I start, I know that some people: a) Think the "Love" remix is a travesty and/or b) Think that Cirque du Soleil is just a bunch of acrobats who cheapen the Beatles' music. If you're in either of those groups, just skip this note and move on to whatever's next on your agenda for the day. I respect your opinion, and this review isn't for you. For everyone else: WOO-HOO!!! I am just back from seeing "All Together Now" at the American Film Institute/Discovery Channel "Silverdocs" documentary film festival, and it is a treat! First of all, the setting -- the festival is screened at the AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland. It's a beautifully restored art deco cinema with state of the art projection and sound systems -- boy, does that add to the experience of seeing a film! But then, the film. It's a kind of "making of" documentary about how "Love" was put together. It intercuts scenes of George and Giles Martin working on the soundtrack with interviews with all the principal players -- Paul, Ringo, Olivia, Yoko, George, Giles, Neil Aspinall, Guy La Liberte and the "Love" director, along with some of the Cirque cast. There are many laugh-out-loud lines among them. My favorite is the Quebecois director after hearing from Yoko at the first full dress rehearsal -- he mutters in French that Yoko hates the show. I haven't been to Las Vegas to see the show yet, so a real treat for me was the film's archive of the show's evolution. It starts with the very earliest run-throughs at the Cirque rehearsal stage in Montreal, more than a year before the opening, with only the barest staging, costumes, and props. You get a real sense of how the show came together, in both an artistic and political process. Eventually the rehearsals move to Las Vegas, with more "flesh" added to the "bones", and with periodic visits from Paul, George M, Olivia, Yoko, et al. And then, finally, opening night, with the show in its full realization. Intercut throughout are also a number of old film clips of the Fabs, individually and solo. If you've been collecting for awhile, you've seen pretty much all of them -- but they're here in very nicely restored form. Especially effective is a montage of the "Get Back" rooftop concert, with footage from "Let It Be", a modern-day re-visit to the rooftop, and Cirque's "Get Back" scene. Paul, Ringo, Olivia, and Yoko all sound themes that will be familiar to people who have been paying attention -- but each of them also says a few fresh and unexpected things.
All in all, if you have the opportunity to see this in theatrical release, go! And I will be looking forward to the eventual DVD release.

Dear Steve, Of course the subject has been delayed. It's Apple Corps isn't it? The company is, by definition, incapable of doing anything in a timely manner, never mind that it only does one thing a year, if that, in the first place. Well, it can unleash a law suit at the proverbial drop of a hat in a timely manner. It does excel at that. That's the poorest excuse for a company EVER! We'll bloody never get any updated CDs. Never. We better get used to that and just forget about the whole mess.
