"Classical Albums: John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band" DVD: Our review

(5/9/2008) The "John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band" album was an album we literally wore out when it was originally released on vinyl. The album's power was astonishing, the music amazing.

Watching the DVD "Classic Albums: John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band" brought that all back to us and more with its inside information on how the album was created. It gives a great overview of how the album became reality.

It recalls how the Classic Ono Band concept came to be -- and how it wasn't originally conceived as a group of human musicians. Yoko Ono recalls how she and John were introduced to Primal Therapy, the album's overall theme. Dr. Arthur Janov, whose book, "The Primal Scream," was the basis of that philosophy, also talks about how he felt John molded the album from his philosopy.

Others who provide behind the scenes stories include Ringo Starr, who played drums on the album, Klaus Voormann, who played bass, historian Mark Lewisohn and engineer Phil McDonald.

The most exciting (and in some cases, breathtaking) parts, however, are the isolated music tracks featured throughout the DVD. We won't give away what you'll hear, but they are incredibly thrilling. Unfortunately, the clips are all too short, though they alone make this DVD a worthy purchase.
