Paul and Heather announce separation (was "Tabloids rife with rumors McCartney marriage is on the skids")

To all: In the past, we've tried to avoid a lot of the tabloid trash about the Beatles. Unfortunately, that tabloid trash has been the type of news this story has been full of. So we suggest taking much of what you read in the tabs with a grain of salt. And know to that these papers truth is usually fiction.

Update (8/20/07)

  • The up-and-down relationship between Paul and Heather is seemingly back up, reports the News of the World. The two have somewhat put a lid on their frosty relations the past few months for the sake of daughter Beatric, a very commendable reason. The story suggests the two might get back together. We think that's a bit of media overhype. This New York Post version is a little grungier, and reports Heather's been out partying at night.

    Update (7/7/07)

  • Why don't we do it down the road? Heather is reportedly looking for a place near Paul's home, reports Now Magazine Online.

    Update (6/17/07)

  • Despite earlier reports, Paul reportedly doesn't want Heather at his birthday party, reports the UK Sun.

    Update (6/11/07)

  • A report in the UK Mirror said Heather will be celebrating Paul's birthday on June 18 with both him and Beatrice. This would seem to indicate a further cooling off in the acrimonious divorce proceedings. The Mirror speculates it as meaning more (a possible reconciliation?), but that remains to be seen.

    Update (6/4/07)

  • Heather wants another chance with Paul? That's the crux of an article in the UK Daily Mail. The real surprise, though, is that the article suggests it's really Paul who wants to get back with Heather because, as what the article says is attributed to Heather, "is that he is the sort of man who needs a woman, and he still believes she is "amazing" and is in awe of her abilities as a mother."

    Update (5/21/07)

  • Finally, some nice news to report: The Daily Mail and News of the World say Paul and Heather have realized their hostile behavior isn't good for daughter Beatrice and have decided to take a friendlier turn toward each other. After the continually hostile stories, it's nice they've decided to make a change. Good move, folks!
  • NME.com says Paul won't be touring until his divorce is finalized.

    Update (5/1/07)

  • Although rumors have Heather asking for between £100 and £200 million pounds in her settlement with Paul, she tells the Daily Mail she's hoping for £25 million.
  • A former bodyguard of Heather's defends her, saying the public is "too down on her," reports PR-Inside.

    Update (4/7/07)

  • Heather Mills broke down during a radio interview with Ryan Seacrest this week, reported the New York Post. During the interview, Seacrest played part of a phone call from a listener saying she was embarrassed that she had harbored negative thoughts about Mills. The call made Mills cry. After she collected herself, she said, "I could have gone down that path of lowering myself to everyone else's level and proving my innocence. And all I did was fall in love with someone madly and give up my life for seven years. And then to be vilified for it? ... I've spent 14 years doing charity work. And, I thought, OK, if I was a gold digger, I'd be a very wealthy woman now. And I'm not!"

    Update (3/5/07)

  • The Australian Daily Telegraph reports that Paul is on the verge of a possible huge victory in his divorce proceedings after Heather screamed at Paul in the courtroom. A legal source quoted in the story said, "Heather thought everything would be very simple. She was gobsmacked by how Paul countered all her points. Paul had not only addressed the things she has put in her petition, he had also prepared a dossier which he believes proves the lies she has told over the years. He wants to prove beyond all reasonable doubt that she is a liar. The more Paul can discredit her, even over the smallest lie, the stronger his case becomes."
  • Earlier story: Mirror: Paul, Heather call truce (for the moment, anyway)
  • Paul, Ringo, Barbara and Beatrice in a pic from the UK Sun.

    Update (3/2/07)

  • Paul and Heather were back in court Thursday for round 2 of their divorce proceedings, reported Sky News, the Press Association and Reuters. Paul was said to appear "cheerful," while Heather made a low-key exit from the proceedings.
  • Lawyers for Paul (Payne Hicks Beach) and Heather (Mishcon de Reya) issued this joint statement Thursday with the approval of presiding judge Mr Justice Bennett:

    London: 1 March 2007

Since the breakdown of the marriage there has been a significant amount of misreporting in the press, including this morning’s report in The Sun of yesterday’s hearing before Mr Justice Bennett.

The parties both ask the media please to respect their privacy and the confidentiality of the proceedings, as they work to settle the outstanding issues between them in their divorce.

    Update (1/26/07)

  • Umm: Heather Mills McCartney has been voted the "World's Biggest Bitch" by readers of the non-existant blog Pop Realster, reports the Mantic Eye. The blog says Mills beat last year's winner Barbara Bush (!) and beating out second-place finisher Ann Coulter and other contenders J-Lo, Naomi Campbell, Michell Malkin, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Madonna and Martha Stewart. (In other words, this is a joke. Send your notes of protest to Mantic Eye.)

    Update (1/24/07)

  • A criticism of Paul McCartney on Mills' official website by Heather Mills McCartney's sister, Fiona, over security arrangements for Heather and baby Beatrice has been toned down on advice from lawyers, reports the Daily Mail. Fiona's statement on the site:

"After eight months of reading disgusting, untrue and hurtful stories about my sister Heather I feel enough is enough and I would like to try and set the record straight. It's impossible to answer every single lie that has been written about her, there are just too many, but over the next few weeks I will try to answer some of them.

"The main reason that I am responding is that I am deeply concerned for the safety of my sister and her daughter. They are receiving death threats, not because she is getting a divorce, but because some of the British tabloids decided from day one that they wish to destroy her, create hatred towards her and profit out of doing so. The vicious agenda of these tabloids has resulted in death threats to my family and I want to try to do something. Heather and Beatrice no longer receive the protection that would be afforded to any other member of the McCartney family facing such threats. It is extremely stressful to be informed by the police of a serious risk to your life and then to be followed by strange cars and people that may or may not be paparazzi.

"We have been accused of creating publicity stunts and leaking information to get publicity. This is not true and is a ridiculous accusation considering all the publicity is negative. It is not hard to work out where the inaccurate information is coming from. It's impossible to leave the house and do anything without being followed by paparazzi who want a picture of anything Heather does. They have followed her practically everyday for 253 days making it impossible for her to have privacy in her life with her daughter. We have even resorted to having to continuously film this harassment since Heather was assaulted by a member of the paparazzi in early July, in order to have proof in court. None of this would be happening if the newspapers weren't prepared to pay for the photographs. It's pointless trying to set the record straight with the newspapers, they are not interested, it's against their agenda, so this seems to be the only forum for the truth. It's impossible to sue newspapers for every lie they print, we already have three libel cases going on at the moment and there are more to follow.

Mills' website also now opens with a page flashing three words, "Enough is enough!"

  • From Greg in Australia:

    Hi everyone,

As a long time fan of Paul who can in no way measure the happiness and joy this man has brought me and countless others i have been feeling a terrible sense of helplesness at Pauls current situation, i've just had an idea of what we can do to show our love and support for Paul.

I'll be posting this to as many lists as possible to put the word out and i call on all fans to spread the word to lists they may be members and moderators of or rings (do they still have them?)

I'm declaring Saturday 28th of October 2006 'International show support and love for Paul McCartney day.'

On this day i'm calling on ALL fans from every corner and nook and crany of the globe to wear a Paul McCartney t shirt (a Paul t shirt preferebley over a Beatle shirt, we need to show people it's Paul we're there for). Anything else that you can do on this day to get the word out would be great, play his music loud in your cars (Paul Doof, Yeh!), conceptual things like sticking messages of support up on places people will see (walls, telegraph polls etc, be creative .. but keep it legal).

Lets try for a ground swell of support for Paul in the fan community, freshen up those t shirts and get them on!!

It'll be that simple. Tell one, tell all .. tell the press!

    Greg xoxo

Court papers said to be filed by Heather Mills McCartney and obtained by the British tabloid the Sun claim Heather was physically abused by Paul, reports the Sun Online. The papers also allege drug and alcohol abuse by Paul that figured into the abuse.

The McCartney camp furiously denied all allegations and say they'll contest them in court. A statement posted on Paul's website paulmccartney.com by his lawyers:

PAUL McCARTNEY STATEMENT FROM PAYNE HICKS BEACH SOLICITORS - 18.10.2006 18th October 2006

Since the breakdown of his marriage Sir Paul McCartney has maintained his silence in not commenting on the media stories believing that it was best for all concerned, particularly his children, for there to be some dignity in what is a private matter.

Our client would very much like to respond in public and in detail to the allegations made recently against him by his wife and published in the press but he recognises, on advice, that the only correct forum for his response to the allegations made against him is in the current divorce proceedings. Our client will be defending these allegations vigorously and appropriately.

Our client is saddened by the breakdown of his marriage and requests that his family is allowed to conduct their personal affairs out of the media spotlight for the sake of everybody involved.

Meanwhile, the Sun featured a photo of Heather riding with her 22-year-old personal trainer. He denied they were having an affair.

The less said about this mess, the better.

  • Update (6/12/06) The tabloids, both in the U.S. and the UK, have their guns drawn full bore at Heather. And each is trying to outflank the others for the most outrageous stories. The most recent issue of the U.S. tabloid the National Enquirer had a little spot in the bottom right corner with the headline, "Heather beat up Paul!" The story claims she slapped Paul more than once in arguments during their marriage. The UK's News of the World claims Heather had a past as a hooker, complete with details. The Mirror ran a denial of the story, complete with details of a phone call she made to Paul to counter the story's claims. (Strangely, the Mirror online link doesn't include the full story.) The Sun's version has the denial and more details than the Mirror, at least online. The UK Guardian featured a story about the allegations and how, due to their separation, the tabloids have taken the gloves off. The story says the tabloids were reluctant to go after her before when she was married to Paul, but have no such qualms now. The Daily Mail goes into much the same detail. Meanwhile, Heather has denied stories she plans to be interviewed about her life with Paul, reports ITV. And the Irish Examiner reports the breakup has had a devastating effect on Paul and that he's at his lowest point since Linda's death. Hello! Magazine reports Paul is concerned about how the tabloid storm is affecting Heather and also says the couple will raise their daughter jointly. (Thanks to Patti Murawski.)

(Thanks to Patti Murawski.)

  • Update (5/23/06)

  • Patti Murawski tells us the launch of Heather's book, "Life Balance," has been canceled. A book signing in Dublin was also postponed, reports Ireland Online.
  • From Steve Ryan:

    Hi Steve,

What a shame about Paul and Heather, but frankly, I'm not surprised. The age and maturity gap, along with Linda's ghost, made it impossible for that marriage to work. I wish them all the best, particularly for baby Beatrice's sake. Next time, may they both find partners closer to their own age and maturity level.

Some more interesting tidbits about Beatle marriages and children:

    1) The four failed marriages (John/Cynthia, Paul/Heather, George/Pattie, and Ringo/Maureen) were all to British women.

    2) The four successful marriages (John/Yoko, Paul/Linda, George/Olivia, and Ringo/Barbara) were all to women with strong American ties (Yoko was Japanese, of course, but has lived in New York most of her adult life; Linda and Barbara were reared in the Big Apple, and Olivia is from California).

    3) In addition to the marriages, there were two broken engagements (Paul and Jane Asher in the '60s; Ringo and Nancy Andrews in the 70's [she later sued Ringo for palimony] and two extramarital affairs (John with May Pang, George with Maureen Starkey, Ringo's first wife).

    4) Three Beatle brides were pregnant (Cyn with Julian, Maureen with Zak, and Linda with Mary). Also, Olivia gave birth to Dhani a few months before marrying George.

    5) John and Paul fathered children in both their marriages - John had Julian with Cynthia, and Sean with Yoko; Paul adopted Linda's daughter Heather; they had Mary, Stella, and James together, and he then had Beatrice with Heather Mills. George and Ringo both had one childless and one child-producing marriage - George and Pattie had no kids (she was [and still is] infertile, but George and Olivia had Dhani; Ringo had all three of his kids (Zak, Jason, and Lee) with Maureen; when he and Barbara tied the knot in 1981, they were already raising five kids (his three, plus Barbara's son Gianni and daughter Francesca, so they apparently decided that five was enough and had none of their own. Thanks again,
    Steve Ryan

  • Update (5/22/06)
  • Paul McCartney has posted four fairly statements of his own on his website the past few days all complaining about media coverage about the separation. This is interesting because, as you know, Paul and Heather complained about inaccurate media coverage in the announcement of Paul and Heather's separation. Taken together, though, it's really more a case of "he doth protests too much" and it's really just inviting more media of the negative coverage they've been complaining about. At any rate, here the first, from May 17:

MEDIA REPORTS - MESSAGE FROM PAUL - 17.05.2006
In reading the media reports that are coming out, I would urge people not to believe them. Almost everything I'm reading is 100% untrue. I urge people not to read this stuff and support Heather and myself at this difficult time.

    Then, the next day:

ANOTHER MESSAGE FROM PAUL - 18.05.2006
Seeing that so many inaccurate stories have been written at the moment about Heather and myself, all I can ask people to do is not believe them and understand that most of what is coming out is made up and entirely false. Thanks for your support.

  • Then on Saturday, the 20th:

    A MESSAGE FROM PAUL - 20.05.2006
One of the worst aspects of going through what Heather and I are currently going through is the malicious spreading of rumours and made up facts that is happening in some areas of the media. The best help people can be to us is to not believe these stories and ignore the painful articles that we are having to endure. Our colleagues are doing their best to help us. We are all finding this aspect of these very difficult times most disturbing. Your support in this would be much appreciated.

  • And finally, from Sunday, the 21st:

A Message From Paul's Publicist – Stuart Bell - 21.05.2006 Paul and Heather are really upset that the media continue to run stories and speculate on stories that are clearly invented. This is a difficult time and they have both respectively asked for some privacy to work though their difficulties. It is not easy for them at the moment having to deal with all the gossip and hurtful things that are being said. We all hope that Heather and Paul can be given some space during this period and its not made even more stressful than it already is.

  • And from Heather's website, the note Paul posted in her defense a while back. Her website, by the way, was down for a time after the separation was announced, but it's back up now. The name Heather Mills McCartney is still on the site, for those of you wondering.
  • AOL is conducting a poll asking whether Heather married Paul for money and whether the divorce will get nasty. Both questions had basically the same percentages of votes with about 66% saying she did marry him for money and that the divorce would get nasty.
  • Detroit News: You say goodbye, and I say goodbye

  • Update (5/18/06) A couple of people emailed us about Paul and Heather using the excuse of media coverage as the cause of their separation. We think most of our British readers will agree that the British tabloid coverage of their marriage was much more intense than the U.S. coverage. The British tabloids were on Heather from day one. That said, the media can't possibly bear all the responsibility for their problems. And looking back, Linda certainly wasn't loved by the press, either. (Remember the "Hey Jude" tape?) But little of the press coverage of the announcement really focused on Beatrice. That's the really sad part of this story.
  • And very ironically, the announcement of Heather's next book, "Life Balance," has just been released. Here's the description of it (with thanks to Patti Murawski):

LIFE BALANCE: The essential keys to a lifetime of well being
Heather Mills McCartney and Ben Noakes
    :: Michael Joseph :: 25th May 2006 :: £16.99 ::
'Over the years I have had periods of affluence and times of near penury, times of good health and times of injury and illness. I have learned that peace of mind has very little to do with luxury or leisure.' -- Heather Mills McCartney

Heather Mills McCartney and Ben Noakes have been friends for over ten years, since they worked together on a series of films that Heather presented for BBC Pebble Mill. Both have experienced rocky times in their lives and learnt to overcome them: Heather throughout her childhood and when she had the accident that resulted in her losing her leg; Ben reached a very low point in his life four years ago when his TV production company went bust, he lost his home, and his wife left him, taking their three small children with her. He went from having a large Georgian house near Hampstead Heath and a Bentley, to living alone in a bedsit, saddled with debts.

One thing Heather and Ben have come to recognise in each other is that they are both survivors. The germ of the idea for Life Balance grew out of this awareness. What is it, they wondered, that makes certain people better able to survive life's knocks? And how are some people able to turn adversity to their advantage? These are the themes that are central to Life Balance. When we achieve and maintain balance in our every day lives, the punches that life throws no longer feel as though they will overwhelm us, they are simply other challenges to be met.

This is not a ghost written celebrity book about how to lead a perfect life. Nor is it a book written by 'experts'. Neither Heather nor Ben claim to be specialists in this field, but then who is? The book came about after Heather had helped hundreds of people overcome adversity and obstacles in life, from amputees to friends and business colleagues like Ben. It was Ben's idea that Heather's 'University of Life' experience in these areas would be a great idea for a book to try and help many others. Their intention in writing this book together is to write personally about their own friendship and the ways in which they each try to maintain stability in their lives. They also lay out a set of tools that can be used by anyone who wishes to adopt a more balanced, healthy lifestyle - the essential keys for life balance - and to provide you with the confidence to take hold of any of these tools and use them to improve your own life.

Life Balance is the perfect book for anyone looking to achieve that thing we all cherish and very few have - a stress free life.

  • BBC: The Beatle and the model

  • (5/17/06) Paul McCartney, 63, and Heather Mills McCartney, 38, announced Wednesday they will separate after four years of marriage, reports the BBC. A joint statement issued by the couple cited pressures from constant media attention as being the overriding cause of the separation. Here's the full statement, as published on www.paulmccartney.com:

"Having tried exceptionally hard to make our relationship work given the daily pressures surrounding us, it is with sadness that we have decided to go our separate ways. Our parting is amicable and both of us still care about each other very much but have found it increasingly difficult to maintain a normal relationship with constant intrusion into our private lives, and we have actively tried to protect the privacy of our child. Separation for any couple is difficult enough, but to have to go through this so publicly, especially with a small daughter is immensely stressful. We hope, for the sake of our baby daughter that we will be given some space and time to get through this difficult period."

In a separate statement also found on his website, Paul defended Heather from recent media stories that her motive in marrying him was money and not love:

"By now you will have probably heard the unfortunate news that Heather and I are going our separate ways. We have issued a statement expressing our sadness at this turn of events but I would like to let people know my feelings about some of the stories which have appeared in the media over the past few days.

"I'm really disappointed that during a very difficult and emotional time for both Heather and myself there are certain people in the media who are writing things about Heather that are just plain untrue. It's been suggested that she married me for the money and there is not an ounce of truth in this. She is a very generous person who spends most of her time trying to help others in greater need than herself. All the work she does is unpaid so these stories are ridiculous and completely unfounded. I'm very sad to see that some insensitive people would choose a moment like this to spread these vicious rumours."

Recent tabloid stories have carried rumors that Heather was frustrated by Paul's fame. Paul is said to be living on the family farm in Peasmarsh, East Sussex, about 50 miles away from his wife who is reported to be at the couple's home in Hove. Recent pictures also showed Paul on holiday alone in the south of France.

    "And I need love
    Yeah
    I need love
Like a second needs an hour
Like a raindrop needs a shower.
    Yeah
    I need love
    Ev'ry minute of the day
And it wouldn't be the same
If you ever should decide to go away."
    -- Paul's song "Waterfalls"

  • From Robert Ceisler:

Hi Steve, Upon hearing the official news of the breakup of Paul McCartney's marriage, I was struck by the symmetry of the marriages of all four Beatles. Assuming Paul and Heather divorce, it will mean that each Beatle was married exactly twice. Each had one relatively short marriage that ended in divorce. Paul and Heather, John and Cynthia, Ringo and Maureen, George and Patti. Each Beatle had one magnificent long-term, true-love, soul-mate: Paul and Linda, John and Yoko, George and Olivia, Ringo and Barbara. Indeed only death parted Paul and Linda, John and Yoko and George and Olivia, and hopefully that'll be the same, a long time from now for Ringo and Barbara who have been together more than 20 years now. Each Beatle had one failed marriage and one that can be seen as one of the great love stories of the 20th century, at least in the context of famous pairings. It's most certainly a sad day for Paul, but maybe it goes to show that more often than not, there really is one true soul mate out there for each of us.

(Comment: Robert, I'll bet others from their own experience would disagree about the one true soulmate, but your other observation about the Beatle marriages is sad but true.)

(Comment: Anyone who is celebrating this news should be ashamed of themselves. One can only imagine what the persistent tabloid headlines did to their marriage. Anyone who claims to know how Heather really is -- or how Paul really is -- most likely has had little contact with them. A separation does not necessarily mean a divorce. Our best wishes go to Paul and Heather for whatever the future holds. We can only wonder, however, how Paul's children, especially Stella are taking the news.)
(5/15/06) Is a divorce by Paul and Heather imminent? That's the conclusion the stories in some of the British papers would like you to think. They cite Paul's solo trips, most recently to the South of France, where he was seen strolling on the beach and drinking alone in a pub. (Here's one from the Mirror, another from the Daily Mail.

One of the latest reports, from the Daily Mail, quoted a McCartney spokesperson as saying, "I don't think they are with each other. I know he is back in the UK but whether they are together now or whether they have seen each other I don't know. They could be together but they could not be."

While the tabloids have been abuzz basically saying a divorce could happen any second, the more traditional publications have kept their coverage to a minimum. The Scotsman played it safer with a relatively low key and more cautious story that said only the marriage may have been in trouble.
