Update (5/20/09)
In fact there are about 15 photos of the Rose Queen procession of 1957, but only two of the Quarrymen and on only one of those can you actually see John. It was part of a roll of 35mm film which was sitting in a dusty box on a shelf in a storeroom with thousands of other negs. My brother told me that dad had searched thoroughly several times without finding any pictures of John or the Quarrymen, which is why we thought there weren't any, he knew his collection of negs much better than we did! there must be more of them if only people knew what they were actually looking for!
(5/15/2009) A newly discovered photograph of the Quarrymen, the precursor to the Beatles, was recently found by Quarryman Rod Davis. The photo shows Pete Shotten, Eric Griffiths, Len Garry, John Lennon, Colin Hanton and Rod Davis on the back of a flatbed truck. From pictures in the Hunter Davies' book "The Quarrymen," it appears the photo may have been taken June 22, 1957, two weeks before Lennon met Paul McCartney on July 6. (John is wearing the same shirt in a photo in the book, as is Len Garry.) Notice the sign above the right-hand window that says "Quarrymen" on it. According to information on the Quarrymen website, Davis found the photo in a collection of black and white negatives and color slides left to him by his father, James Davis, an amateur photographer. The photo was printed in the Daily Mail, but not in the version online. The elder Davis had previously searched for any additional photos, but had been unsuccessful. (The picture is at the link above, along with some additional Quarrymen news. )
