Hi Steve, >From billboard.biz 27-Dec-08, B-board mag 20-Dec-08, United Global Chart: Billboard has published its' 2008 YEAR-END CHART wrap up, with some appearances from the BEATLES, PAUL, YOKO, APPLE, and a Beatles-related Soundtrack. THE 2008 TOP POP CATALOG chart sees BEATLES 1 at #19 for the year - happy 8th birthday! HELP! is the #7 Top Music Video for 2008, with THE MCCARTNEY YEARS at #36 for '08, while APPLE/Capitol is 2008's #7 Top Music Video label! >From Billboard's TOP 200 ALBUMS (US) 0f '08, ACROSS THE UNIVERSE: DELUXE EDITION places at #98, and at #11 for 2008's TOP SOUNDTRACK ALBUMS. Yoko, or rather ONO (her dance diva i.d.), gets placement for both of her '08 remix releases. "Give Peace A Chance" lands at #20 for 2008, while "No No No" secures the #8 spot for the HOT DANCE CLUB PLAY TRACKS. Both went to the #1 position on that chart. ONO is the #4 TOP DANCE CLUB PLAY ARTIST for '08. On to the weekly entries:
- ELECTRIC ARGUMENTS by Fireman continues it's slide down the charts:
- US TOP 200 ALBUMS: slides 42 notches to #177, week 3. Probably 5,000-6,000 copies sold.
- TOP INDEPENDENT ALBUMS: drops only 3 positions to #12, week 3.
- CANADIAN ALTERNATIVE ALBUMS: drops from #21 to #38, week 2.
- GERMAN TOP 100: #100.
- FRENCH TOP 200: slides 68 positions to #132.
"Singing the Changes" also exits JAPAN's TOP 100 SINGLES, while John & Yoko's "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)" enters that chart at #44. Speaking of Seasonal releases, ESSENTIAL NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL CHRISTMAS dips two spots on the TOP 200, to #32 in week 8. However, on the TOP HOLIDAY ALBUMS chart, it rises 4 places to #5, week 11. This is the album that includes "Happy X-Mas (War Is over)" and Paul's "Wonderful Christmas Time". Both of those two songs rise on the HOT HOLIDAY SONGS chart. John & Yoko inch up one spot to #9, week 45. While Paul's song sees an increase in sales and/or airplay, it remains at #16, week 39. On the TOP MUSIC VIDEO chart, ALL TOGETHER NOW and HELP! play leapfrog from last weeks' rankings. ALL TOGETHER NOW jumps back up 7 places to #14, week 8; HELP! dips 13 notches to #25 in its' 42nd week. ACROSS THE UNIVERSE: DELUXE EDITION continues its' leisurely bobbing about the bottom of TOP SOUNDTRACK ALBUMS, rising one spot to #23 in it's 66th week. Best Wishes,
- ELECTRIC ARGUMENTS exits the following charts:
- US TOP MODERN ROCK / ALTERNATIVE ALBUMS
- UK TOP 100
- SWITZERLAND TOP 100
- NETHERLANDS TOP 100
- SWEDEN TOP 60
- NORWAY TOP 40

Update (12/11/08)
Hi Steve, From billboard.biz 20-Dec-08 and United World Chart 20-Dec-08: Considering the general economic state, it's no surprise to find out that after "Black Friday" (shopping lingo for day after Thanksgiving), the remaining T-giving weekend saw a drop in sales. For current albums (less than 18 months old) sales were down 15% from last year same time. For older catalog albums, sales were down 21.5%!On the JAPAN Top 100 Singles, 'Singing the Changes' is at #62, & the chart says last week it was #19. In the number-of-weeks column, it has a zero - ???? On the Top Music Video list, the ALL TOGETHER NOW dvd drops back down to #21, week 7. But the HELP! dvd comes storming back in at #12, its' 41st week! Even though 'Happy X-Mas (War Is Over)' had an increase in sales & airplay, it still drops 2 places to #10 in week 44 on Top Holiday Songs, as other songs push ahead with larger increases. 'Wonderful Christmas Time' moves up one slot to #16, week 38. THE ESSENTIAL NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL CHRISTMAS (and what I call a long title!), with John & Yoko's and Paul's holiday songs, jumps ten points to #30, week 7 on the Top 200. On the Top Holiday Albums chart, it remains at #9, week 10. On the Top Soundtrack Albums, ACROSS THE UNIVERSE: DELUXE EDITON, drops one point to #24 in week 65. The Top Pop Catalog list sees thirty-eight of its' 50 positions occupied by holiday albums and no Beatle albums. But one of the lucky twelve non-holiday albums to jump back onto the chart is the Beach Boys' Aug. 2006 release, PET SOUNDS: 40TH ANNIVERSARY cd/dvd, #43, week 49. PET SOUNDS was also reissued on vinyl this past Sept. Since PET SOUNDS is also available online, it also debuts on Billboard's Top Digital Albums at #14, and is #25 on iTunes. Imagine that - a 60's group on Capitol records observes the 40th anniversay of its' most-celebrated album with a deluxe cd/dvd release. The audio mixes are mono, stereo, 5.1 surround! The visuals include several promo music videos, interviews with all surviving group members and other interested parties - including one Sir George Martin. Two years later the group makes that album available online. All this, even though the group has fractured with stormy interpersonal relationships and multiple lawsuits between members and Capitol records. Congratulations Beach Boys! Gosh-golly, the story sounds so familiar to the Beatles - except for lavish audio-visual reissues of their albums, and online availability. Now I'm sure the Beach Boys are rich by most standards, but not by Beatle standards. So with the B-Boys money factors in differently. STILL, one would think . . . sigh. Best Wishes, William Concannon
- Fireman's ELECTRIC ARGUMENTS dropped sixty-eight notches on the Top 200 #67 to #135 in it's second week. A sales guess-ti-mate would be 6,000 to 8,000 copies.
- On the Top Independents chart, EA drops from #1 to #9.
- On the Modern Rock/Alternative chart, EA drops from #12 to #24.
- Thursday evening on Amazon US, EA was #104, and it is not in the iTunes Top 100.
- ELECTRIC ARGUMENTS has dropped out of the UK Top 100, and in the NETHERLANDS EA has dropped twenty-seven positions to #93.
Update (12/8/08)
Hi Steve, The 13-Dec-08 issue of Billboard magazine reports that The Fireman's ELECTRIC ARGUMENTS racked up 17,000 copies in U.S. sales according to SoundScan. This grabbed the album it's #67 Top 200 debut, and its' #1 debut on the Top Independent Album Chart. Best,
William Concannon
Update (12/5/08)
Hi Steve - from US Billboard.biz 13-Dec-08 and United World Chart 6-Dec-08: The Fireman's ELECTRIC ARGUMENTS makes a modest debut on the US Top 200 at #67, probably selling in the 12,000-15,000 range. I've read that the entire album was/is available for free via both NPR online and MySpace. Maybe that and a lack of word-of-mouth so far that Fireman is Macca & Youth account for the tepid 1st-week sales. After all, MEMORY ALMOST FULL peaked at #3 and went Platinum, and CHAOS AND CREATION... peaked at #6 and went Gold, so wtf? The album has disappeared from iTunes' top 100 today, after showing up at #75 on Tues. and #99 on Wed. It was also down to #86 last time I checked the Amazon top 100 today. Through the United World Chart I found that ELECTRIC ARGUMENTS debuted at #79 in the UK, and #66 in the Netherlands. Back to Billboard and the US, the album is #1 on the Top Independents chart, since it is not being handled by any major label, but MPL/ATO.On the Music Video chart, the news is better for the ALL TOGETHER NOW dvd, which rebounds 16 slots back to #5 in week 6, most likely due to holiday shopping. So ATN has now spent a month in the top five. The Hot Holiday Songs chart reactivated last week and escaped my notice. When the cart was stopped Jan-08, "Happy X-mas (War Is Over)" was at #9. Last week it inched to #8 and remains there this week, its' 43rd on the chart. "Wonderful Christmas Time" froze last Jan. at #19, dropped to #21 last week, and rebounds to #17 in this, its' 37th week. ESSENTIAL THAT'S WHAT I CALL CHRISTMAS, which contains the two above-mentioned songs, rises to #40 in week 6 on the Top 200, and stays at #9 in week 9 on the Top Holiday album chart. ACROSS THE UNIVERSE: DELUXE EDITION drops five places to #23 in week 64 on Top Soundtracks. The Pop Catalog chart also reflects some early holiday buying, as eleven non-holiday albums enter the chart - unforunately none of them Beatles. However, six "Greatest..." sets by Michael Jackson, ABBA & others all see a jump. No BEATLES 1. No White Album, in spite of all the 40th anniversary publicity. No LOVE, nevermind the big jump by the ATN DVD. Hmmmmm. Well, three top EMI Music executives did leave the foundering company this week, with two more rumored to follow. Paul did say the online Fabs catalog debut halt was due to differences between EMI and the Beatles. Could strained relations and a crumbling EMI be putting a dent in Beatles sales? Is a better question "How could it not be?" Next week the full force of the biggest shopping weekend of the year kicks in - stay tuned. Warm congratulations to Paul & Ringo on their Grammy nominations! I hope they're both feeling "well chuffed" and all that! Best, William Concannon
Update (12/1/08)
Hi Steve, hope any reading this who may have over-indulged in T-Giving festivities have recovered nicely, and have joined the brigades of militant shoppers out there in the field. Not me! I'm not going out there until Mon.! A few friends & I do Tofurky - yes, tofu with turkey aspirations. An acquired taste, differnt sort of preperation - but we're doing it for Linda Mac and our Paul! Not to mention for live turkeys crammed into beheading machines as a backdrop for Sara Palin PR.>From US Billboard.biz 6-Dec-08, Billboard magazine 29-Nov-08 & 8-Nov-08.
After a 12-rung drop last week, the ALL TOGETHER NOW dvd slowed to a 4-notch drop to #21 in its' 5th week. The ATN dvd's purpose, besides entertainment & sales, was partly to keep the Vegas LOVE show in the minds of the public, as well a give a kick to the sales of the now two-year-old LOVE cd. Which it did for exactly one week, increasing LOVE's sales by 38% over it previous week, to 4,000 copies the chart week of 8-Nov-08.
A week or two after that, LOVE disappeared from the Top Pop Catalog chart. Of the current 9-Dec-08 Pop Catalog Chart's fifty positions, about 33 are holiday albums, with a couple of AC/DC-mania albums hanging in there. That leave 15 positions, several taken up by some of the "Greatest Hits" titles mentioned last week, with the Beatles not holding any of those spaces.
On the Top Soundtracks chart, ACROSS THE UNIVERSE: DELUXE EDITION saunters up two positions to #18, week 63.
ESSENTIAL THAT'S WHAT I CALL CHRISTMAS, opening with J&Y's 'Happy X-mas' & also containing Paul's 'Wonderful Christmas Time', also climbs 2 notches to #9 (insert your own Beatles #9 reference here) in it's 8th week on the Top Holiday Album chart. On the Top 200, the same album climbs 10 places to #45, week 5.
Warner Brothers Records is celebrating its' 50th anniversary, and for the occasion, Billboard has listed Warner's Top 100 singles. This includes any other label Warner is/was distributing - Reprise, Sire, Paisley Park, Curtom. But the labels for our focuas are Dark Horse and Geffen. To those of you who may not find the following three entries such a much, think of how many thousands of singles Warner & it's subsidiaries released over Fifty years!
So, from their top 100: #73 - 'Got My Mind Set On You' - Harrison placing higher than such iconic tunes as J. Taylor's 'You've Got A Friend', Doobie Bros. 'Black Water', P. Gabriel's 'Sledgehammer', Association's 'Never My Love', Weissberg & Mandel's 'Dueling Banjos', and more by Prince, Fleetwood Mac, Guns N' Roses, etc. Sorry to go on for such lengths, but I'm so proud of George and happy to see his legacy alive during a rather quiet time for him - c'mon Scorsese documentary! I bet 'All Those Years Ago' was #101 or something similarly frustrating!
Zooming up to #31 and past forty-two other golden oldies & newies, we come to Johnny Rhythm Ono Winston Lennon's achingly beautiful 'Woman', followed by PP&M's 'Leaving On a Jet Plane', and Petula Clark's 'Downtown'. Not too shabby!
Zip on up another 20 slots past mega-hits such as America's 'Horse With No Name', 'Somethin' Stupid' by Frank & Nancy Sinatra, Clapton's 'Tears in Heaven', R. Stewart's 'Do Ya Think I'm Sexy', Madonna's 'Like a Virgin', and Prince's 'When Doves Cry'. We land at #11 with John's "Elvis Orbison" hit '(Just Like) Starting Over', made ironic and tragic by what was to follow, but also a damned fun song and a huge hit.
So much for Fabs-related hits, but I HAVE to tell you Warners' #1, right? Sitting down with pepto-bismuth in hand? #1 - Debby Boone - 'You Light Up My Life'.
NEXT WEEK: the chart debut of FIREMAN'S ELECTRIC ARGUMENTS.
TWO WEEKS FROM NOW: The results of the post-Thanksgiving Day weekend shopping blitz - will the ATN dvd get a sales boost? Will LOVE and BEATLES 1 edge back on the Pop Catalog Chart? Does the shaken and stirred EMI/Capitol even have sufficient distribution (forget promotion, methinks) to get Beatle and ex-Beatle cds on the shelves in sufficient numbers? Will Rocky and Bullwinkle find Mount Upsidaisium? Tune in. Best, William Concannon

Update (11/25/08)
Hi Steve, and a Happy Thanksgiving to you & yours, and to all readers of this site! >From U.S. Billboard.biz 22-Nov-08, 29-Nov-08, Billboard magazine 8-Nov-08: The ALL TOGETHER NOW dvd dipped one position to #5 in its' 3rd week, then slid twelve notches to #17 in week 4. This is the Beatles' 8th Top Ten Music Video. Billboard failed to mention what the other 7 are, but here's what I came up with after a little sluething in their archives, organized by date with peak position:Also found was THE MAKING OF A HARD DAY'S NIGHT - #21 - 1995. No mention found of earlier vhs releases of AHDN, HELP!, YELLOW SUBMARINE, and no listing at all for LET IT BE. As mentioned before, the online b-board archive is a work in progress, with many gaps. On Top Soundtracks, ACROSS THE UNIVERSE: DELUXE EDIION rose one postion to #13, then dropped to #20, week 62. ESSENTIAL THAT'S WHAT I CALL CHRISTMAS zoomed fifty-five places to #80, then to #55 in its' 4th week on the top 200. On the Top Holiday Albums Chart, the album dropped to #15, then jumped to #11 in its' 7th week. Aside from "Happy X-Mas (War Is Over)" and "Wonderful Christmas Time", the album also includes tracks from the Beach Boys, Elton John, Chuck Berry and others. If they added George's "Ding-Dong, Ding-Dong"; Ringo's "I Wanna Be Santa Clause"; Yoko's "Listen, Snow Is Falling"; and other seasonal songs from the Kinks, Jethro Tull, Greg Lake, and Keith Richards (yes!) - well I might pry open the wallet. A quick search on Amazon shows 226 entries for "Happy X-Mas" (!), 38 for "Wonderful Christmas Time". The latest Top Pop Catalog now has about 30 holiday titles, and gone are both LOVE and BEATLES 1. However, several other "Greatest" and "Best of" albums remain on this chart, five of which are older and have logged more chart weeks than BEATLES 1: Abba - 460 weeks Journey - 784 wks. Bob Marley & the Wailers - 970 wks. Bob Seger - 729 wks. Creedence Clearwater Revival - 613 wks. (and of course the eternal "Dark Side of the Moon" - 1,633 wks.) So is the Fab's absence due to lack of interest? Or could it have something to do with Apple & Capitol parent company EMI? If you've followed the links here on ABBEYRD detailing EMI's problems, it's cause for wonder, if not concern. EMI's loss of $1.2 billion for the year ending 31-Mar-08, added to the reshuffling and out-sourcing of distribution, loss of staff, etc. brings some questions to mind. Will this company be able to handle the cd roll-out of the remastered Fabs catalog? The online debut? If EMI was steadier, would we have had the remastered catalog for this holiday season instead of 1 documentary dvd, a game, and a puzzle? All nice - but. For contrast, UMG (Universal Music Group) had $3.9 billion in sales for the first 9 months of 2008.
- 1. ALL TOGETHER NOW - #2 - 2008
- 2. HELP! - #2 - 2007
- 3. FIRST U.S. VISIT - #1 - 2004
- 4. ANTHOLOGY - #1 - 2003 (dvd) #1 - 1996 (vhs)
- 5. A HARD DAY'S NIGHT - #2 - 2002
- 6. YELLOW SUBMARINE - #2 (dvd), #1 (vhs) - 1999
- 7. THE COMPLEAT BEATLES - #1 - 1996

Hi Steve, From 15-Nov-08 U.S. Billboard.biz: The ALL TOGETHER NOW dvd has dipped slightly from #2 to #4 in week 2 on the Music Video Chart. ACROSS THE UNIVERSE: DELUXE EDITION drops from #10 to #14 in its' 60th week on the Top Soundtracks Chart. THE ESSENTIAL NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL CHRISTMAS cd, which opens with John & Yoko's "Happy Chrismas (War Is Over)" and also includes Paul's "Wonderful Christmas Time" is at #135 in its' 2nd week on the Top 200 Chart. On the Top Holiday Chart, it is #12, week 5. Yes folks, that means that people were already buying X-mas cds in mid-Sept! I'm no Grinch, but I think even Charlie Brown would join me in a heart-felt "aauugghh" about that. The 50-position Pop Catalog Chart already contains 7 older Holiday albums while 4 Halloween cds remain. Add these to the 7 catalog AC/DC-mania cds, and we've filled sightly over 1/3 of the chart! While LOVE hangs in there at #27 (week 96), BEATLES 1 disappears from the chart again. In holiday seasons past, X-mas albums have swamped all but 5-10 positions on the Pop Catalog Chart, so we may not see BEATLES 1 again until Jan.'09. (A check on Amazon.com shows Elvis alone has 6 X-mas albums in print!). Then again, with no new music-only Beatles releases, "1" might be on enough holiday shopping lists to bring it back before Jan. One small correction and one "By the King of Fuh!" puzzlement re: last week's top 5 Beatles chart longevity list: SGT. PEPPER has logged 393 weeks, not 390. According to the most recent edition of "Joel Whitburn's Top Pop Albums", compiled from Billboard's charts, the 1967-1970 album has indeed logged a total of 257 weeks, as I wrote. But if one goes to Billboard online, the total is 220 weeks. Their online chart archive is a work in progress, with some older charts showing many albums with a zero in the "weeks on chart" column! So I'm sticking with 257. Best Wishes,
William Concannon (Wanting a last Thanksgiving meal burp b4 hearing any holiday music.)
Hi Steve:>From 8-Nov.-08 Billboard.biz:
The ALL TOGETHER NOW dvd has debuted at #2 on the Music Video Chart, sandwiched between AC/DC at #1 and Kiss at #3.
The LOVE cd, which was moved from the Top 200 to the Pop Catalog Chart around its' 70th week, jumped from #40 to #21, its' 95th week.
After a 2-week absence, BEATLES 1 returned to the Pop Catalog Chart at #32 in its' 412th week. Four more weeks will mark 8 years on the US charts for this title, already the longest-charting Beatles album in the US. SGT. PEPPER is next with 390 weeks, ABBEY ROAD with 336 weeks, 1967-1970 with 257 weeks, and THE BEATLES(White Album) rounding out the top 5 with 253 weeks.
ACROSS THE UNIVERSE: DELUXE ED. remains on the Top Soundtrack Chart at #10 in its' 59th week. It has also been bouncing off and on the lower regions of the Top 200 Chart for the last couple of months. Great site as always, Steve.
Best Wishes,
William Concannon

Update (1/5/07)
Happy New Year Steve and All! In the post-holiday buying decline, the Beatles' LOVE dropped 8 notches out of the US Top Ten, to #13 in it's 6th week. Billboard didn't give the sales numbers, but with numbers given on some other albums, I'll make an educated guess-timate that LOVE sold about 75,000 copies last week, for a US total so far of about 1,105,000. I bet Gian Carlo will have the exact number. On the charts for Internet Albums and Rock albums, LOVE dropped one position to #2 on each chart. Remember how in the weeks leading up to year's end I mentioned that many albums, including LOVE, posted hefty sales gains, yet dropped in chart # ranking? Now it's the opposite. One example is "Eminem Presents The Re-Up", which jumped 17 places up the chart, from #24 to #7, even though it had a 45% sales decrease! LOVE maintains it's #1 spot for the 6th week on the European chart. It's #5 in France, and jumped from #10 to #3 in Austria, #5 to #3 in Germany, #9 to #7 in Spain, and #8 to #5 in the UK. On the World Wide chart, LOVE holds the #1 spot for a fifth week, with six-week worldwide sales of 3,152,000 copies! On the US Top Pop Catalog chart, BEATLES 1 rose from #10 to #6 in it's 320th week. In its' 14th week on the US Top Classical chart. Paul's ECCE COR MEUM moved up one notch to #8. A correction from last week: The Beatles' 44th US chart anniversary won't be until 27-May-07. Fourty-four years ago that day, "She Loves You" charted at a pre-Beatlemania position of #116! It would re-enter the chart 25-Jan-64 and get to #1. Update (1/2/07)
Hi Steve, The Beatles' LOVE had it biggest-selling week in the US yet during the pre-Xmas week. It moved three places up the chart to #5 and sold 282,000 copies, for a five-week total of 1,030,000. LOVE held onto it's #1 position on the Internet Chart, where it's been every week except it's second when it dipped to #3. The album also moved to #1 on yet another Billboard chart, Top Rock Albums. It's run on that chart the previous four weeks was #2, #3, #2, #2. The trend of #1 albums during LOVE's chart run falling below the Fabs in the second week continues, with Young Jeezy falling from #1 to #18, the fourth album so far to top the Beatles for one week then drop below them, usually waaay below. How many of these 1-week wonders will still be earning platinum albums 44 years after they first hit the charts? On the US Pop Catalog Chart, BEATLES 1 jumped twelve positions from #22 to #10 in its' 319th week. Paul's ECCE COR MEUM dropped a couple of notches to #9 in it's 13th week on the US Top Classical Chart.

Update (12/27/06)
Just writing to let you know that the latest issue of Billboard shows that the Beatles' LOVE album remained at #8 on the top 200 chart, and it is listed as having been certfied platinum.
Update (12/23/06)
Hi Steve, LOVE has been certified as the Beatles' THIRTY-NINETH US Platinum album! LOVE remains at #8 on the charts, in spite of a second weeks' gain in sales - 178,000, up from last weeks' 152,000 - for a SoundScan total of 748,000. Since many of those copies are the CD/DVD 2-disc set, and since the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) counts the number of discs in an album, hence the Platinum certification for 1,000,000 copies - in just 1 month! Again, last weeks' #1 album by Ciara drops below the Fabs in it's 2nd week (#11), just as did Incubus (#47 in it's 3rd week), and Jay Z (#32 in his 4th week). They all held the #1 spot over the Beatles for only 1 week, then fell below LOVE in their 2nd week and continue to drop, while the Beatles remain strong. LOVE holds the #1 spot on the European chart for the 4th week in a row. It's #1 in Greece, rises from #7 to #5 in France, #10 to #9 in Spain; and holds at #6 in the UK where it's 4-week sales total is 466,000 according to the Official UK Charts Company. In the US Top Classical Chart, Paul's ECCE COR MEUM logs it's 3rd month in the top ten, holding onto the #7 position in it's 12 week. (Sources: Billboard.biz, RIAA.com) Happy Holi-daze to All,
William
Just an update. The Love album has gone up the charts again, rising two from 6 to 4. John's Happy Xmas has also gone up the charts, into Canada's top 10. It has gone from 14 to 10. Merry Christmas! Aaron Badgley,
Update (12/18/06)
In its' 3rd week on the US charts, the Beatles' "LOVE" dropped from #5 to #8, but still had a sales increase to 152,000 copies - up from last week's 146,000. This shows how strong the competion is at this time of year; albums can increase in sales yet still drop in chart position. To show how "LOVE" is still hanging in there, last weeks' #1 album from Incubus dropped to #37 in it's second week. Jay-Z, who held the #1 spot 2 weeks ago, is now at #15 in his third week. The 3-week sales total for "LOVE" has now hit 570,000 copies according to SoundScan, making it the Beatles' FORTY-FIFTH (!) US Gold Album! On the Internet Chart, "LOVE" returns for a second week at #1 after dipping to #3 last week. It remains #1 in its' second week on the European Chart, and in Canada, the album drops to #5. "BEATLES 1" is #27 on the Top Pop Catalog Chart in it's 317th week. Paul's "Ecce Cor Meum" drops to #7 in its' 11th week on the Top Classical Chart. (All info from Billboard.biz)
Here is some Canadian Chart News. Love is number 6 (down two points) and even more surprising, John and Yoko's Happy Xmas is up two points from 16 to 14 on the top 100 singles chart.
Update (12/14/06)
Hi Steve, According to Billboard online, the Beatles "LOVE" cd sold 146,000 copies in the US in its' 2nd week, down from 272,000 copies for its' 1st week, for a 2-week total of 418,000 copies. If "LOVE" sells at least 82,000 copies next week, it will already qualify for Gold Album status - their 45th US Gold album! - just 3 weeks after its' release! Best Wishes,
William
Update (12/8/06)
Hi Steve, In it's 2nd week on the Top 200 Albums chart (16-Dec.), the Beatles' "LOVE" drops 1 position to #5. It drops from the #1 Internet album to #3, and likewise on the Canadian chart - from #1 to #3. So "LOVE" is still hanging in there in spite of fierce competition from new releases. For comparison, last week's #1 artist, Jay-Z, dropped below the Fabs to #6 this week. While neither John nor Paul's latest albums made the Top 200, Paul's "Ecce Cor Meum" has had an impressive 10-week run so far on the Top Classical chart, entering at #2 on 14-Oct., holding at #2 the next week, followed by 3 weeks in the #4 position, dropping to #6, then back up to #4, and rising to #2 for the next 2 weeks. This 16-Dec. issue finds him back at #4. So who kept him from the #1 spot? At first Joshua Bell's "Voice of the Violin", then Sting's "Songs from the Labyrinth". "The US vs. John Lennon" peaked at #19 on the 14-Oct. Top Soundtracks chart, disappeared for a week, then came back for 1 more week at #23 on the 28-Oct. chart. A correction from my report last week: George's "Living in the Material World" entered the the Top Pop Catalog Chart at #36, not #38 (I need new glasses), and was the "Hot Shot Debut" for that week, but only spent 1 week on the chart. Sean's "Friendly Fire" spent 1 week on the Top 200, at #152. On the Heatseekers chart, he dropped from #5 to #26, then off the chart. (All info sourced from Billboard.biz) Keep up the great work, Wiliam
Hi Steve, According to Billboard Online, The Beatles' "LOVE" entered the the Top 200 album chart at #4 today, selling 272,000 copies. Ahead of them on the chart at #3 is the various artists hit collection "Now 23", at #2 is "American Idol" finalist Chris Daughtry, and at #1 is rapper Jay-Z. In Europe, "LOVE" took the #1 spot in the European chart by hitting the Top 5 in nine different countries: #2 in Germany; #3 in the United Kingdom, Denmark, & Ireland: #4 in Holland, Austria, & Spain; and #5 in Portugal and Finland. "Beatles 1" has now logged over 6 years on the charts, lagging behind only "Abbey Road" and "Sgt. Pepper" in the Fabs' album chart longevity. In chart news from last month, George's "Living in the Material World" reissue hit the Top Pop Catalog at #38 on 14-Oct. Sean Lennon's "Friendly Fire" entered the Top 200 at #152 on 21-Oct., but reached #5 on the Heatseekers Chart, which is reserved for artists who haven't yet cracked the top half of the Top 200 Album Chart. Sadly, Neither "The US V. John Lennon" nor Paul's "Ecce Cor Meum" had entered the Top 200 as of late Oct. More surprisingly, "Ecce Cor Meum" hadn't yet made it onto either the Top Classical Chart nor the Top Classical Crossover Chart. I haven't any further chart info on these four albums by John, Paul, George, and Sean since Billboard doesn't post complete chart info online - and I haven't been able to get to the library again to check their print copies! John has only had 1 other album miss the Top 200 (with or without Yoko), 1998's "Wonsaponatime" compilation of cuts from the "Lennon Anthology" box set. Paul's had five other misses; "The Family Way" Soundtrack, both "Fireman" albums, "Liverpool Sound Collage", and "Working Classical". Keep up the great work - best Fab source by far! Best,
William Concannon
Hi just wanted to let you know that Love entered the Canadian charts at number one. It has very limited airplay in Toronto, but it is selling extremely well. Thanks Aaron Badgley

Hello Steve, I´m a fan of the Beatles from the Czech Republic, so please excuse my horrible English. I would like to provide some recent chart facts about the Beatles (or ex-members) from our country. Highest position in the Czech TOP 40:
"1" - #22 (8 weeks in chart)
Brainwashed - #34 (1 week)
Chaos and Creation in the Backyard - #17 (3 weeks) I consider it as a big success when you realize that it wasn´t allowed to listen to the Beatles music for thirty years during the period of communism! Bye,
Jakub
Steve,
the George Harrison CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH DVD has climbed to no. 9 on the Billboard Comprehensive Music Video Chart for January 7, 2006. The DVD has been on the chart for 9 weeks. It was at no. 12 last week.
Update (11/14/05)
Hi: Just to let you know, Paul's Chaos album went from number 58 to 74 this week on the top 100. Lennon's latest greatest hit package only charted for one week and peaked at 91. George's Bangla Desh has not charted on the CD charts. Thanks
Aaron
Steve, the George Harrison Concert for Bangladesh DVD has debuted at no. 1 on two Billboard charts: The Billboard Comprehensive Music Videos Chart and the Billboard Top Music Videos Chart. Paul McCartney's Gold CHAOS AND CREATION album remains at no. 44 this week in its 7th week of release on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart.
Update (11/1/05)
Looks like Paul’s CD has moved UP this week on the Billboard Album Chart. It went from #54 to #44 and is now certified GOLD so that is good news! Good for Paul because I absolutely LOVE the CD and STILL have it playing in my CD player. IMHO, Jenny Wren is a good choice for the next single. It would be nice if a video was made from his tour to be shown on VH-1. A live video of it could be great. For the NEXT single, it should be Too Much Rain (my favorite song on the CD). Just my two cents!
Steve, in the November 5, 2005 Billboard, CHAOS AND CREATION IN THE BACKYARD climbs back up the Top 200 Album Chart to no. 44! Moreover, the RIAA has certified CHAOS as Gold in its 6th week of release. Fox News got it wrong, very wrong! THE BEATLES 1 album is at no. 11 on the Billboard Pop Catalogue Chart this week. On the Billboard music video charts, the Cream ROYAL ALBERT HALL DVD is no. 1 for the second week. That DVD features the Eric Clapton-George Harrison composition "Badge".
Update (10/26/05)
Steve, in the UK NME Singles chart, the Paul McCartney "Fine Line" single on Parlophone debuted at no. 20. CHAOS AND CREATION IN THE BACKYARD debuted at no. 10 on the UK Album charts last month.
Update (10/19/05)
Steve, 2005 has been a good year for Beatles cover singles on the Billboard singles charts. This year, "Across the Universe" by the ensemble from the Grammy Awards that included Stevie Wonder, Bono, Steven Tyler, and Alicia Keys, reached no. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" by Paul McCartney and U2 recorded at the Live 8 concerts in London, reached no. 48 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and no. 12 on the new Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart for digital download sales. In its fourth week of release CHAOS AND CREATION IN THE BACKYARD by Paul McCartney is at no. 38 on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart.
Hi: Chaos and Creation has gone down this week to 36 from 32 last week. John' Working Class Hero entered the Canadian charts at 91.
Update (10/3/05)
Paul's new album, Chaos and Creation...tumbled from 5 to number 26 this week in the National Canadian Charts.
Update (9/24/05) From Carl Savich:
Steve, CHAOS AND CREATION IN THE BACKYARD by Paul McCartney has debuted at no. 6 on the October 1, 2005 Billboard Top 200 Album Chart. The album debuted at no. 3 on the Billboard Internet Sales Chart. THE BEATLES 1 album moved up to no. 16 on the Billboard Pop Catalogue Album Chart from no. 22.
Hi: Wanted to let you know that Paul's new album, Chaos and Creation in the Backyard entered the Canadian charts at no.5. This is an amazing feat given that Toronto has given the album no airtime. However, in Montreal, the album entered their chart at No. 1. Aaron Badgley
Update (7/11/05)
Hi Steve, As always, enjoy the site very much, especially the advance news on upcoming releases. Still no word on a remastered "Walls And Bridges" I guess. Ringo's "Choose Love" didn't make the Billboard Top 200 since SounScan counted the Dual Disc and the regular CD as separate items (grrr...). Too bad, it's only Ringo's second studio album to not hit that chart, 1992's "Time Takes Time" the other. I'm not counting 1983's "Old Wave" since it wasn't released in the usa until the CD re-release in '94. "Choose Love", the Dual Disc, did hit the Top 50 Independent Albums, at #29 on 25-June, dropping to #46 in the most recent issue, 2-July. Releases on the Koch label qualify for this chart since Koch isn't part of, or distributed by, a major label. "Ringo Rama" peaked on this same chart at #6 on 12-April-03. Another reason it's a shame that "Choose Love" didn't hit the Top 200 (aside from the fact that it's an excellent cd!!) is that it would have extended Ringo's solo career chart life to just under 36 years! As it stands, that figure remains at just under 33 years, still an outstanding run so far, and longer than Paul's solo chart life - but only until Paul's new album in September.Best Wishes,
William
Steve, the new Paul McCartney DVD IN RED SQUARE has debuted at no. 2 on the Billboard Music Video charts. The Diamond BEATLES "1" album is at no. 11 this week on the Billboard Pop Catalogue Chart, down from no. 8 last week, in its 240th week on the chart.
Update (4/29/05)
Steve, THE BEATLES "1" album has been certified DIAMOND by the RIAA, which means sales of 10 million. The album is currently at no. 9 on the Billboard Pop Catalogue Album Chart.
Update (3/9/05)
THE BEATLES 1 album is at no. 7 in its 224th week on the Billboard album charts. The album dropped from no. 5 last week and no. 3 the week before. The Grammy single "Across the Universe" has dropped out of the top 50 on Billboard after debuting at no. 22 last week.
Update (1/2/05)
Steve,In the January 1, 2005 Billboard, the 9x Platinum THE BEATLES 1 album is at no. 8 on the Pop Catalogue Chart in its 214th week on the chart, moving up from no. 9 last week.
THE BEATLES CAPITOL ALBUMS, VOLUME 1 album is at no. 20 on the Internet Album Sales Chart and is at no. 110 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart.
The 6x Platinum NOW, THAT'S WHAT I CALL CHRISTMAS is at no. 4 on the Pop Catalogue Chart, which features John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War is Over)" and Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime".
Update (12/6/04)
THE BEATLES CAPITOL ALBUMS, VOL. 1 is at no. 16 this week on the Billboard Internet Sales Chart and no. 104 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart.
Update (12/4/04)
1 is currently at #18 in the Pop Catalog Album chart. It's behind a Keith Urban album and sixteen Christmas themed ones. The Capitol Albums: Volume One has already disappeared from The Top 100. I guess only the fanatics purchased it. It sold 37,000 in its first week, but considering that it isn't in the top 100, its total stands at around 50,000 copies sold in the United States so far. Since it's a four disc set, the album has sold at least 200,000 units, and considering all the copies still in stores, it's easily shipped over 500,000 units (125,000 boxed sets)....still, it's a shame that the band's latest release may not be going platinum for some time.
Update (12/1/04)
THE BEATLES CAPITOL ALBUMS, VOL. 1 has debuted at no. 116 on the Canadian Album chart. In the December 4 Billboard Top Internet Sales Chart, the album debuted at no. 7, and as previously noted, debuted at no. 35 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart. John Lennon's ACOUSTIC album is at no. 18 this week on the Billboard Internet album sales chart, while it drops to no. 116 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart. THE BEATLES "1" album is at no. 11 this week on the Billboard Pop Catalogue chart.
John's "Acoustic" album hit #3 in College Music Journal's (www.cmj.com) national retail chart. With Billboard being the only survivor among themselves, Cashbox & Record World and with them using Soundscan (which ignores collector shops and independent record stores as their only method of doing their album chart, I now look at the retail chart that College Music Journal does every week as an alternative. K believe they survey stores of all sorts, the way charts have traditionally been done...so, it may, in fact, have more relative value. By the way, this marks the 42nd year in a row...That's right 42 YEARS IN A ROW that The Beatles, alone or together, have had at least one album reach the top ten in either the US or Britain (or, obviously, both). Over the past couple of years, records from The Beatles have generally charted higher on CMJ's chart than on Billboard. ("Brainwashed" hit #8 there, "Let It Be...Naked" went 1.) In a week...maybe less, they'll post the numbers for the week "The Capitol Years Volume 1" debuts. Let's hope that makes it to #1, but, it should do better than its showing in Billboard.
The Beatles Capitol Albums Vol. 1 has debuted at no. 35 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart with sales of 37,000.
Update (11/19/04)
Hi: John Lennon's "Acoustic" CD entered the Canadian Soundscan charts at #66. "Rock 'n' Roll" did not chart. The album has received little or no attention in Canada.
Update (11/12/04)
Steve, there hasn't been a lot of Beatles-related chart activity recently but now the new releases have all charted. On the Bilboard Top 200 Album Chart, the new John Lennon ACOUSTIC album has debuted at no. 31 with sales of 28,000. The ACOUSTIC album is also no. 6 on the Billboard Internet Album Sales chart. The John Lennon ROCK N ROLL album has debuted at no. 17 on the Billboard Pop Catalogue Chart. The Beatles "1" album is currently no. 8 on the Pop Catalogue chart in its 208th week on the charts. Best regards,
Carl Savich
Hi Steve:Paul's single 'Tropic Island Hum'/'All Stand Together' has fallen to number 39 in the singles chart. Brian Wilson's 'Smile' has gone straight in the album charts at number 7.
Richard Porter
http://www.beatlesinlondon.com
Paul McCartney's Tropic Island Hum/All Stand Together single has gone straight in the charts at 21 in the UK. Also in the charts is Brian Wilson with 'Wonderful' at 29 - it's great that they've both got hit records at the same time.
Update (8/14/04)
Billboard.com indicates “1” has been the greatest gainer of the week – climbing to number 4.
In the August 7 Billboard Pop Catalogue Album Chart, THE BEATLES 1 remains at no. 4 in its 193rd week on the chart.
Update (7/14/04)
This week, the BEATLES 1 album drops to no. 3 in its 190th week on the chart in the July 17 Billboard Pop Catalogue Album Chart.
Steve, In the current Billboard Pop Catalogue Album chart, THE BEATLES 1 CD remained at no. 2 this week.
Steve, in the current Billboard Pop Catalogue Chart, THE BEATLES 1 CD moved up one spot to no. 2. This is also a historic week for rock and roll as Elvis' single "That's All Right Mama" (re-released by BMG to mark the 50th anniversary of its release) went no. 1 on the Billboard Singles Sales Chart, meaning it is the biggest selling single in the US this week! And they all said rock and roll would not last! Think again. The Beatles recorded Elvis' version of "That's All Right" for the BBC and it appears on the album The Beatles Live at the BBC. The Beatles also recorded the B-side to that single, Elvis' version of "Blue Moon Of Kentucky" found on the ANTHOLOGY series. Paul McCartney has also recorded "That's All Right" solo, as have George Harrison and Ringo Starr on the Carl Perkins special. Bob Dylan also recorded an unreleased version of Elvis' "That's All Right" in the early 1960s. On his first album, Bob Dylan listed Elvis as one of his greatest musical influences along with Carl Perkins. (Not many people know this fact. Get the first Dylan album and read the liner notes that Dylan wrote for it.). So Elvis was very influential with this record, on both The Beatles and Bob Dylan. And now, 50 years after it was first released, it is no. 1. This is certainly a historic event.
Steve,
BEATLES 1 moved up one spot to no. 3 on the Billboard Pop Catalogue chart this week.
Update (6/6/04) The Beatles "1" has slipped to No. 5 on the Billboard Top Pop Catalog chart. (Thanks to the Vadais.)
And from Carl Savich:
THE BEATLES 1 CD is at no. 5 this week on the Billboard Pop Catalogue Album Chart, dropping from no. 4 last week.
Jeff Beck has debuted at no. 15 on the Internet Album Sales Chart with his new live album Live at B.B. King's Club which features a live version of "A Day in the Life". I saw Beck perform "A Day in the Life" live on his 1999 Who Else? Tour and it is a great version. Wes Montgomery also has a great guitar instrumental of that song from the 1960s. Jeff Beck's new live album can be ordered from the Sony website for Jeff Beck.
Update (5/15/04)
THE BEATLES 1 CD remained at no. 4 for a second week on the Billboard Top Pop Catalogue Chart in its 182 week on the charts. The new Guns n Roses Greatest Hits album, which features "Live and Let Die", debuted at no.3 on the Billboard top 2Sony0Sony web site for Jeff Beck0 Album Chart. ET reported yesterday that John Ritter has a Beatles quote on his gravestone. It reads: "...And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make" from "The End" from Abbey Road.
Steve, BEATLES 1 is at no. 2 this week on the Billboard Pop Catalogue Album Chart.
Update (4/18/04)
Steve, The RIAA has certified THE CONCERT FOR GEORGE DVD on Warner 7x Platinum in the Video-Longform Certifications for March 23, 2004. THE CONCERT FOR GEORGE was certified GOLD, PLATINUM, and MULTI-PLATINUM (7x). THE BEATLES: THE FIRST U.S. VISIT DVD on Capitol was certified GOLD, PLATINUM, and MULTI-PLATINUM (2x) on March 15, 2004. THE BEATLES 1 album climbed from no. 5 to no. 3 in the April 17 Billboard Top Pop Catalogue Album Chart.THE BEATLES 1 CD is no. 1 in the April 24 Billboard Top Pop Catalogue Album Chart and is the "Greatest Gainer" on that chart.
Steve, The Beatles: The First U.S. Visit DVD has been certified 2x Platinum. In the March 27 Billboard Top Music Videos Chart, it was at no. 14. The Concert for George DVD was at no. 22 on the Billboard Top Soundtracks Chart for March 27. The John Lennon Legend CD was at no. 49 on the Pop Catalogue Album Chart. In the current Billboard, THE BEATLES 1 CD is at no. 5 on the Pop Catalogue Chart.
Beatles 1 has now spent a total of 8 weeks in the #1 spot on the Pop Catalog Chart, the same amount of time it spent at #1 on the Top 200 Chart in 2000 & 2001. It's also spent at least 10 weeks in the #2 spot, where it remains on the 27-March rankings. Since the beginning of 2004, Sgt. Pepper has logged 8 weeks on the Top 50 Catalog Chart, peaking at #29. Abbey Road has spent 3 weeks on the same chart also this year (#40 peak), along with the Lennon Legend CD, in it's 8th week (#34 peak). Total chart life so far for these 4: Beatles 1, 174 wks; Sgt. Pepper, 358 wks; Abbey Road, 324 wks; Lennon Legend, 27 wks. The DVD of Lennon Legend has received a Gold certification. Let It Be - Naked spent it's 14th and last week on the Top 200 at #172. Only the two Past Masters CDs and the 1982 vinyl Reel Music compilation have had shorter chart stays of all the Beatles' albums. The CFG broadcast effect: After the PBS airing of Concert For George, the DVD rebounded from #26 to #8 on the Top 40 Music Video Chart, and currently sits at #9 in its' 17th week. The CFG CD returned for a 12th week to the Top 25 Soundtracks at #19. On Amazon, the days following the CFG broadcast saw all of George's albums take a sizeable increase in rank, with Paul's Wingspan and Driving Rain also seeing a hefty rise. Amazon's Top 100 CDs included CFG, LIBN and the return of ATMP, the White Album, Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper and The Best of George. As Carl Savich reported, George's Dark Horse Years Box made #18 on the Top 25 Internet Chart. But unfortunately it didn't make the Top 200 (which includes internet, store, TV, etc. sales). None of the individual Dark Horse reissued albums have charted either, not surprising considering the comments from fans who had to special order or try several stores to get them. If the core fans have trouble locating the albums, how are new or casual fans expected to buy them? Better late than never - Yoko's "Will I"/"Fly" +3 CD e.p. peaked on the Dance Singles Sales chart at #19 in Nov. This is the 5th of her remix project CD e.p.s, all of which have made the top 25 on the Dance Charts, including her #1 "Walking On Thin Ice".
In the March 27 Billboard, THE CONCERT FOR GEORGE DVD is at no. 9 this week on the Top Music Video Chart. THE BEATLES 1 album remained at no. 2 on the Pop Catalogue Album Chart.

DirIn :
Steve and folks: In Brazil we've got an independent magazine called "Sucesso" that deals with the CD and DVD charts. Currently, according to their research, Let It Be...Naked is at #13 after debuting at only #39. I think the album still has a chance to make to the top 10, as the sales get a bit hotter next to Christmastime. Also, it's important to notice that we had no media advertising of any kind. Only special parties and articles printed on websites and newspapers. Almost zero promotion for the album, unfortunately.
Steve, I just chedked the 12/8 edition of "College Music Journal". They have a top 200 retail chart. Obviously not from "Soundscum". I'm assuming it is done the old way. Calling record stores and probably includes both chains and independent (mom & pop) record stores. With Cashbox" and "Record World" gone, I've viewed "CMJ" as a viable alternative to "Billboard" at least for this chart. (And, so you know, the chart is not filled with rap, metal and alternative...as the paragraph below will prove.) In this edition, "Let It Be...Naked" hit #1! Not only that, but "Concert for George" debuted at #37! Great news, huh?
Norway: LIBN is down (from #6 to #19) to #25 in its third week.
I left out a couple of LIBN world chartings: #6 in Italy, #5 in Denmark. Both these also from 6-Dec Billboard 'Hits of the World'.
Steve, In its third week on the UK NME album chart, LIBN drops from No. 23 to No. 31 this week. On the United World Album Chart, LIBN drops fron No. 2 to No. 6 this week. On the Top 10 Album Chart in Chile, LIBN dropped from No. 2 to No. 3. LIBN remains No.1 on the Amazon.com music chart. There has been no promotion of the LIBN album. There are no MTV or VH1 promo videos. There is no promo buzz for the album. It does look like Britney Spears' first single off of her new album has flopped badly. Another big surprise: It looks like Michael Jackson's NUMBER ONES album has also flopped on the global charts. An album of No. 1 singles. It worked so well for the Beatles and Elvis. But not for Michael Jackson.
Hi Steve; John's "Lennon Legend" DVD debuted at #15 on 6-Dec's Billboard Top Music Videos. In addition to the CFG Double-DVD debuting at #6 on the same chart the same we and the CFG Double-CD premiering at #97 on the Top 200 Albums chart, CFGs 2-CD entered at #6 on the Top Soundtrack CDs chart. Also in Dec-6, a couple of differences from the great & comprehensive LIBN report here 20-Nov by Wolfgang Steiner. LIBN shows as #1 in week 1 in Japan (instead of #2), and is a no-show in the Canadian Top Ten (instead of #8).
Steve, LIBN is down from #2 to #8 on this week's Swedish albums chart. However, it has been certified gold.
Update (12/5/03)
LIBN dropped to No. 19 on the Canadian Top 100 Album chart in its second week, after debuting at No. 8.
As the Swedes again prove to have better taste than us Norwegians, LIBN is down from #6 to #19 in its second week on the charts here. It may be a comfort to some that Michael Jackson's new compilation album debuted at #36 last week and is already out of the top 40. ;-)
Steve, LIBN is No.1 on the Billboard Internet Sales Chart for December 13. LIBN has been No.1 on the Amazon.com music chart since November 15. LIBN is now officially the top selling album on the internet. LIBN is at No. 17 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart this week. BEATLES 1 dropped to No. 7 on the Pop Catalogue Chart in its 159th week. THE CONCERT FOR GEORGE remained in the top ten at No. 8 on the Billboard Music Video Chart this week.
Update (12/4/03)
I was perusing the Billboard website, and found that the "Concert for George" DVD debuted at #6 on Billboard's Music Video chart. (And for those who need to compare to Michael Jackson on this one too, Jackson apparently also has a new DVD titled "Number Ones", which debuted at #9.)
Hi Steve, Just a quick note wondering about the debut of The Concert For George CD set on the Billboard Album Charts. I read on Variety.com that the 2-CD set sold a little less than 20,000 copies in it's debut week, which according to other chart placings I have read, would mean that the album probably placed in the lower rungs of the Top 100. Have you heard any word yet on it's exact chart debut? The DVD set is faring better - landing a debut at # 6 on Billboard's Top Music Video chart. All the best - Mike Carrothers Double Fantasy Mystery Video Page www.vintagebb.com/lennon
- LIBN debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Internet Sales Chart for December 6.
- BEATLES 1 moved up to No.5 on the Pop Catalogue Album Chart in its 158th week on the chart. The No. 1 album this week on that chart is NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL CHRISTMAS which features "Happy Xmas" by John Lennon and "Wonderful Christmas Time" by Paul McCartney. That album is 5x platinum.
- THE CONCERT FOR GEORGE on Rhino Home Video debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard Top Music Video Chart.
- The top grossing movie in the US for two straight weeks now, THE CAT IN THE HAT, features The Beatles song "Getting Better".
Update (12/2/03)From Carl Magnum Palm:
Let It Be... Naked is up from #6 to #2 on the latest Swedish album chart.
Update (11/14/03)
In the November 22 Billboard, BEATLES 1 is at No. 7 on the Pop Catalogue Chart in its 156th week on the chart.
Update (11/7/03)
BEATLES 1 remained at No. 4 for the second week on the Billboard Pop Catalogue Chart. LIBN is at No. 3 on the Amazon.com album chart as of November 6. IN THE ZONE by Britney Spears is at No. 47 while BEG FOR MERCY by G-Unit is at No. 88. To be sure, the amazon chart gives only a very rough picture of how the album will sell when released. Amazon.com is for internet sales and with the case of LIBN reflects pre-orders. Britney Spears and G-Unit will have the bulk of their sales at retail outlets on the week of release. We all know that. Moreover, Britney Spears will have a network television special to promote the album before release. We also know that rap albums sell well. But the so-called "1 generation" of Beatles fans, the under 25 age demographic, is keen to follow up on the success of BEATLES 1. They made BEATLES 1 the biggest album of 2001. At some point, critical mass was achieved and BEATLES 1 went nuclear. At that point, nothing could stop the album. It was No. 1 for 8 weeks. Not Shaggy, not The Back Street Boys. No rap album whatsoever. It looks like the Backstreet Boys were destroyed by the encounter with the Fabs. Anyone know what they are doing now? It was one of those great moments in musical history. To me, it is a question of whether LIBN clicks with the 1 generation. Ultimately, the quality of the music will be decisive.
Update (10/23/03)
In the November 1 Billboard, THE BEATLES 1 album climbed up to No. 3 from No. 7 in its 153rd week on the charts.
Update (10/11/03)
BEATLES 1 is at No. 7 on the Billboard Pop Catalogue Chart for October 18 in week 151 on the charts.
Update (10/5/03)
Steve, in the October 11 Billboard. BEATLES 1 climbed two spaces to No. 5 on the Pop Catalogue Chart in its 150th week on the charts. Last week, BEATLES 1 was at No. 7 on the same chart. BEATLES 1 has now spawned another imitation record. Billboard reported that Michael Jackson will be releasing an album of No. 1s (but which will not include SAY SAY SAY with Paul McCartney). BEATLES 1 of course was used as the model by BMG for ELVIS 30 #1 HITS and now the follow-up, ELVIS 2nd to None. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but....EMI/APPLE perhaps should have looked into copyrighting the concept!
Update (9/19/03)
BEATLES 1 is at No. 7 in the September 27 Billboard Pop Catalogue Chart in its 148th week.
Update (9/14/03)
in the September 20 Billboard, THE BEATLES 1 is at No. 5 on the Pop Catalogue Chart this week in its 147th week on the charts. The album remains at 8x Platinum.
Update (9/5/03)
BEATLES 1 moved up one space to No. 4 in the September 13 Billboard Catalogue Chart.
Update (8/29/03) Craig Pospisil and Carl Savich sent us info that The Beatles "1" has moved from #8 to the #5 best selling album on Billboard's Pop Catalog Chart in its 145th week in the September 9 Billboard Pop Catalogue album chart.
On the Top Music Video chart, Paul McCartney is at No. 6 with PAUL IS LIVE IN CONCERT ON THE NEW WORLD TOUR in his second week on the chart.
Just to let you know, Beatles 1 has jumped from 16 to 7 on Billboard's latest Pop Catalogue Chart, as noted on their website.
Update (8/1/03) From Carl Savich:
In the August 9 Billboard, THE BEATLES 1 album moved up two spaces to No. 16 in its 141st week on the chart.
Update (7/25/03) From Carl Savich:
Steve, In its 140th week on the chart, THE BEATLES 1 album climbed up to No. 18 this week from No. 21 last week in the August 2 Billboard Pop Catalogue Chart.
Update (7/12/03) From Carl Savich:
THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY moved up one place to No. 7 in its 14th week on the Billboard Top Music Video Chart in the July 19 issue. The BEATLES 1 is at No. 18 on the Catalogue chart in its 138th week.
Update (7/10/03) From Carl Savich:
Steve, In the July 12 Billboard, THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY dropped to No. 8 in its 13th week on the Top Music Video Chart. On the Pop Catalogue Album Chart, THE BEATLES 1 album is at No. 16 in its 137th week on the chart. Returning to the topic of Bruce Springsteen covers of Beatles' songs, there is one more. In 1998, Bruce joined Steve Earle in a live performance of "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby", a song popularized by George Harrison and The Beatles. The song was originally an album filler on the Sun DANCE ALBUM by Carl Perkins in 1957. The song became known only after The Beatles recorded it for the BEATLES FOR SALE/BEATLES '65 album and after it was performed in concert at the Hollywood Bowl and at Shea Stadium. David Bowie's cover of the George Harrison song "Try Some Buy Some" is great to hear and should focus greater attention on the album from which it originally appeared, the #1 LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD album from 1973. Harrison originally wrote that song for Ronnie Spector who released a version of the song at that time. Just a side note. I was looking at the track listing of the Carl Perkins DANCE ALBUM and noticed that the Beatles covered virtually the entire album. It was released in the UK and US in 1957 and is virtually UNKNOWN in the US. The album is out of print. That is an album that should be released by Rhino because it is obviously one of the most influential albums of all time. It opens with BLUE SUEDE SHOES and contains SURE TO FALL, TENNESSEE, GONE GONE GONE, MOVIE MAGG, and EVERYBODY'S TRYING TO BE MY BABY, all titles the Beatles (or solo Beatles) covered. To round out their Perkins collection, the Beatles most likely bought the GLAD ALL OVER/LEND ME YOUR COMB 45 on Sun. In terms of "influence", it is hard to overstate the significance of the above album and 45. This is just something that is usually overlooked.]
Update (7/1/03) From Carl Savich:
In the June 29 NME chart, THE BEATLES 1 album on Apple holds on to No. 100 for a second week in a row.
Update (6/29/03) From Carl Savich:
In the July 5 Billboard, both THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY and THE BEATLES 1 hold their ground on the charts. The ANTHOLOGY remained at No. 3 on the Top Music Video Chart while BEATLES 1 remained at No. 12 in its 136th week on the chart. We are seeing a pattern here. Both the DVD and the album are demonstrating staying power on the charts. THE BEATLES 1 album should be going to 9x platinum soon. It has been at 8x platinum for about a year and a half now.
Update (6/22/03) From Carl Savich:
In the June 22 UK NME album chart, The Beatles and Paul McCartney hang on in the top 100. BACK IN THE WORLD dropped 34 spaces to No. 94 while THE BEATLES 1 album dropped 18 spaces to No. 100.
Update (6/21/03) From Carl Savich:
In the June 28 Billboard, THE BEATLES 1 album climbed 2 spaces to No. 12 this week on the Pop Catalogue Chart in its 135th week on the chart. On the Top Music Video Chart, THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY remained at No. 3 in its 11th week on that chart.
Update (6/19/03) From William Concannon:
Hi Steve, Many thanks to Mr. Savich for keeping us updated on chart & RIAA awards! To clarify the 13 x Platinum Anthology DVD certification, whereas a single Platinum CD would signify 1 million copies, a Platinum Long- or Shortform single DVD represents 100,000 copies. So for a single Long- or Shortform DVD, 13 x Platinum would mean 1,300,000 copies. Since the RIAA certifies by the number of disks in a set and the Anthology DVD has 5 disks, 13 x Platinum for Anthology equals 265,000 copies of the box set. Still a very impressive and record-breaking amount!
Update (6/16/03) From Carl Savich:
Paul McCartney's BACK IN THE WORLD live album climbed 6 spaces back up the chart to No. 60 this week on the NME Top 100 Album Chart for June 15. George Harrison's BRAINWASHED album slipped 20 spaces to No. 91. THE BEATLES 1 album on Apple shot up 24 spaces to No. 82. On the singles chart, Yoko Ono dropped to No. 67 with the single "Walking on Thin Ice." On this week's UK chart, The Beatles are at No. 82 with THE BEATLES 1, The Rolling Stones are at No. 85 with FORTY LICKS, Elvis Presley is at No. 65 with 30 #1 Hits, The Doors are at No. 69 with THE BEST OF, and Elton John is at No. 78 with his recent greatest hits album. And they said rock and roll would not last....
Update (6/14/03) From Carl Savich:
In the May RIAA certifications, THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY DVD, released on 4/1/03, received three sales awards, in the RIAA Gold and Platinum Video Longform Certifications, THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY received the GOLD, MULTI (13), and PLATINUM awards.
Update (6/10/03) From Carl Savich:
In the June 21 Billboard, THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY remained at No. 3 on the Top Music Video Chart in its 10th week on the chart. THE BEATLES 1 album dropped 2 spaces on the Pop Catalogue Chart to No. 14 this week.
Update (6/9/03) From Carl Savich:
In the NME Top 100 album chart for June 8, Paul McCartney's BACK IN THE WORLD album dropped one space to No. 66. George Harrison's BRAINWASHED album dropped 23 spaces to No. 71 this week. On the NME Top 100 singles chart, Yoko Ono debuted at No. 35 with her single "Walking on Thin Ice" on the Parlophone label in the UK under the name "Ono".
Update (6/7/03) From Carl Savich:
In the June 14 Billboard, THE BEATLES 1 album climbed back up to No. 12 from No. 17 on the Pop Catalogue Chart in its 133rd week on the chart. THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY is No.3 this week in its 9th week on the chart. The new Led Zeppelin DVD, selling 120,000 copies this week, broke the sales record for music DVDs set last year by Paul McCartney's BACK IN THE US DVD, which sold 61,000 in its first week. With regard to the hsitory of EMI and Parlophone, let me present a brief history of EMI here. EMI resulted from the merger of two record companies, the Gramophone Company originally formed by Emile Berliner, and the Columbia Graphophone Company of Thomas Edison. The Gramophone Company was set up in the UK in 1897 to sell the newly invented gramophone by Berliner and his flat disc records. Thomas Edison's company made phonographs and cylinder discs. Needless to say, Berliner and Edison invented the record player and records. In April, 1931, to avoid bankruptcy during the depression, Gramophone and Columbia merged to form EMI (Electric and Musical Industries, Ltd.). In November, 1931, EMI opened the recording studio complex at 3 Abbey Road, in St. John's Wood in north London. In 1926, Columbia had purchased the German record company Odeon and Parlophone. Parlophone, however, was a British record company that specialized in jazz recordings. "Parlo" is the Italian word for ! "speak". Originally, The Beatles signed on Parlophone in 1962. EMI now owns Chrysalis and Virgin Records (the Rolling Stones' label) in addition to Capitol, Odeon, and Parlophone.
Update (6/3/03) From Carl Savich:
Steve, in the June 1 NME Top 100 album chart, George Harrison's BRAINWASHED album on Parlophone dropped 19 spaces to No. 48 this week. Paul McCartney's BACK IN THE WORLD album on Parlophone dropped 11 spaces to No. 65. THE BEATLES 1 album on Apple dropped two spaces to No. 93. There was a typo last week for the singles chart on NME. ANY ROAD dropped 14 spaces from No. 37 to No. 51 last week, not 17. Parlophone is a EMI subsidiary in the UK. Parlophone and Odeon were German record companies that EMI purchased in 1926.
Update (5/30/03) From Carl Savich:
Steve, in the June 7 Billboard, THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY climbed back up to No.2 on the Top Musiv Video chart while BEATLES 1 dropped to No. 17 this week. With regard to the 1976 BEST OF GEORGE HARRISON album on Capitol in the US, I have subsequently learned that Harrison wanted to select the tracks for the album but that he was not allowed to do so by EMI executives who instead chose the song selection. EMI bought Capitol Records in 1955 by the way so Capitol is just the American subsidiary of EMI (Music and Electrical Industries, Ltd,). Harrison had left EMI/Capitol at that time and apparently they saw this as retaliation or revenge. Harrison later said in interviews that he was disgusted with the selection. He pointed out that there were many good songs to choose from, including DEEP BLUE, the B side to the 1971 BANGLA DESH single. With regard to LOVE COMES TO EVERYONE, I have subsequently learned that Harrison and American DJs preferred that as the first single off the album. Because there is so much good George Harrison material, a box might be an appropriate release that includes the REMO BROS. single and material from WONDERWALL MUSIC. There is live material from the 1974 Harrison tour of the US and material released in the 1980s. A BEST OF album or retrospective is also something that could be released with the inclusion of the TRAVELING WILBURYS material. At any rate, it is not to let for Capitol to get it right with a BEST OF album for George Harrison. Releasing singles is essentially a subjective matter. In my view, LOVE COMES TO EVERYONE and ANY ROAD and NEVER GET OVER YOU showcase Harrison's songwriting and guitar virtuosity better than the singles that were released. I would have preferred that ANY ROAD be the first single, followed by NEVER GET OVER YOU, then followed by STUCK INSIDE A CLOUD. It is a matter of what is more commercia and showcasing the talent of the artist. You ideally want the single to promote the album by selling well on the singles charts. But it is a subjective judgment. At any rate, EMI/Capitol have yet to release a good BEST OF album for George Harrison.
Update (5/29/03) From Tim Smith:
Steve: In response to Carl Savich's discussion of how Capitol marketed the Brainwashed release, I couldn't agree more in general. Why isn't Capitol doing more now, in light of how the album is re-energized in the UK? But, I thought "Stuck Inside A Cloud" was a very good choice for a single. It in my opinion is the standout track of a great album, I still get chills listening to it. It also was a sentimental choice from Dhani, who said it was his favorite track of the set. Had there been a video released at the time, it might have done better, I don't know. But I heard the song probably 15 times on radio stations in my area, not a great amount, but it was fairly well represented. And it did go Top 30 on the Billboard AC chart for about a month earlier this year. Perhaps people can still hound Capitol (David Munns in New York) to do something else. One idea is to commercially release another single in the fall and link it to the upcoming Concert for George DVD; also repackaging Brainwashed the way they did in the UK at that time. It could be pushed again over the holidays if done right. One last comment about the 1979 album. "Blow Away" was a Top 20 hit and No. 1 single on the AC chart. It was all over the radio that spring, and the album it came from went Top 15 and did pretty well. Should "Love Comes To Everyone" been the first single? Maybe. But "Blow Away" was definitely a deserving single, and was nowhere near being a dud.
Update (5/27/03) From Carl Savich:
Steve, In the May 25 NME Top 100 Album Chart in the UK, George Harrison's BRAINWASHED album on Parlophone has re-entered the Top 100 Album chart at No. 29. THE BEATLES 1 album on Apple has also re-entered the Top 100 at No. 91, moving up 17 places from last week. Paul McCartney's BACK IN THE WORLD live album on Parlophone dropped 7 spaces to No. 54.On the UK NME Top 100 Singles Chart, George Harrison's ANY ROAD single on Parlophone fell 17 spaces to No. 51 from No. 37 last week. The new George Harrison single ANY ROAD made the Top 40 on the UK charts.
The success of the ANY ROAD single in the UK and the return of the BRAINWASHED album on the UK album charts shows that Capitol is not doing enough to market the album in the US. Moreover, ANY ROAD should have been the first single off the album, followed by NEVER GET OVER YOU. These two songs are the only selections worthy of singles in my opinion. It was a mistake to release STUCK INSIDE A CLOUD as a single. This flub is reminiscent of the 1979 GEORGE HARRISON album on Dark Horse when the first single off the album should have been LOVE COMES TO EVERYONE (which features Stevie Winwood on keyboards). That should have been the single and not BLOW AWAY.
The biggest fiasco that Capitol is guilty of, however, is the release in 1976 of George Harrison's Greatest Hits album that featured only a side of his solo hits and a side of Beatle cuts. This has got to be the greatest screw-up of a greatest hits album of all time. Leave it to Capitol Records. I still cannot comprehend how Capitol was short of "hits" for George Harrison. Harrsion had released WONDERWALL MUSIC in 1968, ELECTRONIC SOUND in 1969, a 3 disc ALL THINGS MUST PASS, a 3 disc CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH including a single, the No. 1 LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD album, DARK HORSE, and EXTRA TEXTURE. This is a ton of material. And Capitol could only find about half a dozen "hits" from all of this material. The album cover was also so deplorable that it was later changed. Harrison is shown in front of a car. In the original cover, it was a bizarre graphic that had just Harrison's head in a view of the solar system. How bad can it get? In my view, Capitol has dropped the ball on the BRAINWASHED album. Where are the singles? Why isn't NEVER GET OVER YOU a single? This is my take on it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MSN 8 helps ELIMINATE E-MAIL VIRUSES. Get 2 months FREE*.
Update (5/26/03) From Nigel Tant:
Brainwashed is in at 29 on the official UK album chart this week - at last some recognition for a truly great album which is, in my humble opinion, one of the best solo Beatle albums ever. Talking to people I know who aren't 'fans', they seemed to think it was a new release, which just shows how pathetic EMI were in promoting it last year. Still, better late than never, I suppose...

Hi Steve, In the 10-May-03 Billboard Dance/Club Play chart, Yoko's "Walking on Thin Ice" Remixes are #1. Who'd thunk it? Ono #1 on any charts? It is an interesting thing, since on one of Yoko's CDs, John's voice comes from the control room saying she's just cut her first #1. I always thought: Dear, optimistic, reality- challenged John. Over 22 years later, he's proved to be right.

Update (4/12/03) From Wolf Steiner with chart news from Germany:
Hello, Here`s the German chart news for the Beatles and Paul: The Beatles Anthology DVD Box debuts at No. 16 in the official German CD albums chart this Friday. It is the highest-ever position any DVD has reached in the German albums chart! The previous record holder was Paul`s Back In The US DVD which peaked at No. 39 just last week. Paul`s Back In The World falls from No. 18 to No. 23, while the Back In The US DVD falls from 39 to 48 this week.

Update (4/4/03) From William Concannon:
Kind of a disappointing 1st week for "Ringo Rama", compared to "Vertical Man" in '98. However, on the "Top Independent Albums" chart in 12-Apr. Billboard, "Ringo Rama" debuted at #6. It's eligible for this chart since Koch is an independent label, not a subsidiary of a larger group like EMI or Warners.
Update (4/3/03) From Bill King:
Ringo Rama debuted on Billboard's Top 200 at #113 with a bullet selling 8,957 units according to SoundScan.

The last chart gives us a good indicator on where the album will debut on Billboard. The media exposure of the album is having an effect on sales.
Update (2/28/03)
I managed to snag a copy of the 8-Feb. issue, and here's a couple of placings I don't think were reported on the site: On Top Pop Catalog, "Abbey Road" was at #46, up from #50 the previous week. Also, "Lennon Legend-the Very Best of..." popped back on the same chart at #43. Sadly, "Brainwashed" had already disappeared complete- ly.
Update (2/27/03)
I was surprised to see "Stuck Inside A Cloud" on Billboard's AC charts. It debuted at No. 29 in the Feb. 15 issue, and inched up to No. 28 for the Feb. 22 issue.

It is remarkable that the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Paul McCartney all have best-selling albums on the chart at the same time.

Let me supplement the chart news. BRAINWASHED is at No. 144 on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart for the January 18, 2003 issue. Steve, In the January 11, 2003 issue of Billboard, BACK IN THE US is at No. 30 on the Top 200 Album chart and at No. 7 on the Internet Sales chart. BRAINWASHED is at No. 120 on the Top 200 Album chart and at No. 23 on the Internet Sales chart. BEATLES 1 is at No. 8 on the Pop Catalogue chart. With regard to internet sales, Billboard counts those in determining the chart positions. So internet sales count and are not ignored by Billboard. Like everyone else, I think Capitol could have done more to promote BRAINWASHED. But when you consider that this was the first George Harrison solo studio album since 1987., no tours, no appearances, a top 20 Billboard debut and an RIAA Gold Album certification is not too bad.
