THE BIG THREE -- CAVERN STOMP (Deram) and THE E-TYPES -- INTRODUCING THE E-TYPES (Sundazed): Two more discs for British Invasion fans. The Big Three were contemporaries of the Beatles in their Cavern days. This disc kicks off with their version of "Some Other Guy," a song also performed by the Fabs at the Cavern. Other highlights include three versions of "Bring It On Home to Me," the same tune later that became a hit for the Animals and "Cavern Stomp," a dance for Liverpool fans. If you like the Searchers, you're sure to like these guys. Their sound features a strong rhythm guitar similar to what the Searchers used. It's surprising. after listening to this disc, that the Big Three aren't a little more revered among British Invasion fans. The E-Types were an American group hailing from Alisail, CA., near Salinas (and south of San Jose) who were very influenced by the British Invasion, especially the Beatles and the Zombies. This disc includes three Beatle covers -- "Things We Said Today", a live version of "Wait" that sounds remarkably the released version and a cover of "Love of the Loved" that sounds a bit different from the Decca Tapes version (which, when this was recorded in '66, hadn't been bootlegged). Other songs covered on this disc: "No Milk Today", "Live" (the great Merry-Go-Round/Emitt Rhodes song), the Beau Brummels' "Just a Little" and "Still In Love With You, Baby" and Yardbirds songs "Evil Hearted You", "Mister, You're a Better Man Than I" and "Shapes of Things." (Who didn't cover the Yardbirds?) They may not have been as well known as their South Bay neighbors the Count Five and the Syndicate of Sound, but judging from this disc, they could easily hold their own.(July '96)
