UNDER THE COVERS (Graphix Zone/CD-ROM/Mac and Windows): Update (Aug. '99): "Under The Covers," which has been out of print for some time, is now available again through Henry Diltz's website.

Multimedia rock has had few really good CD-ROMs so far. Voyager's "A Hard Day's Night," of course, is one of our favorites, as is the "Forrest Gump" CD-ROM. Add this one to our short list of really great titles. It's unassuming purpose is to feature the photography of veteran Henry Diltz and Grammy-nominated art director Gary Burden. But more than just a photo exhibit, "Under the Covers" is a fun trip through an extensive rock 'n' roll archive. Material of over 200 artists is included, including advertising billboards and album covers. The disc really shines when it zeroes in on the Eagles, the Doors and Crosby Stills and Nash. Included are outtakes from album cover photo sessions, video (the Doors) and stories. The disc also includes pics from the Monterey Pop Festival and commentary by Ben Fong-Torres. There's so much included here, and it's not couched in the phony tour or exploration setup that has made other rock CD-ROMs little more than curiosities. "Under the Covers" is a journey worth taking.(Oct. '96)
