The re-launching of "Yellow Submarine": The CD and movie (formerly "Report: "New Beatles video coming in the fall" and "New Beatles single coming in the fall")

Update (2/12/01) Someone emailed us within the last week that a friend who worked at a store said "Yellow Submarine" had shown up on their deleted lists. Nah, couldn't be, we thought. We mentioned this to Dr. Bob Hieronomus, author of the soon-to-be released book about the making of the movie, and he checked with a friend at MGM. Here was the friend's reply:

"I am double checking this, but initially, the answer is that when VHS supplies run out, they do not make more of them since VHS sales are very low now. However, DVD's should still be available and are continuing to be distributed. I'll let you know if I hear otherwise after further checking."

So if you're planning to get a VHS, you might want to get soon.

Update (12/30/01) From Andrey Avetisyan:

Hi, Steve Firstly, I wish a Beatley and prosperous New Year to yourself and your great site! And just to let everybody know - here in Russia the year starts with the first ever screening of Yellow Submarine on the Russian TV. Take care, Andrey Avetisyan

Update (7/5/00) Roger McGough, former partner with Mike McCartney (McGear) in the Scaffold, is planning to write a children's book based on "Yellow Submarine," for which he originally contributed dialogue, reports the Liverpool Echo. He received no royalties, only $1,000 from the American company who made the film. ""I was deeply disappointed that I never received any credit for my work. I didn't even receive a single penny in royalties. I might have ended up working in Hollywood if my name was used in the credits," McGough said. "Who knows what it might have lead on to? I could have have had lots of job offers in America. I worked very hard on the script and ended up writing stuff I hadn't even been asked to do. I wasn't even credited when the film was re-released last year, which was adding insult to injury. Now I think it's time to put the record straight and get some of the recognition I deserve." McGough added Scouse humor to the original script, which was considered too American. McGough is waiting for approval for the book from Apple. (Thanks to Sylvia.)

Update (11/6/99) There is a British import limited edition vinyl version (yellow vinyl, we're told, though we haven't opened ours).

Update (10/29/99) In its sixth week on the chart, the album has dropped to number 84, down from #71.

Update (10/24/99) The album now sits at 71 on the Billboard 200, down from 59 last week.

Update (9/29/99) Diego Sada Jr. tells us there is indeed a laser version of "Yellow Submarine." It doesn't have all the extras of the DVD, but is in widescreen. List is around $29.98.

Update (9/27/99) Peter Batten, the actor who did George's voice in the movie and who was missing for the Liverpool celebration, was found living on a powerboat in Belgium, the Electronic Telegraph reported September 19. Batten says he had had "great fun" making the original, but had "no great desire" to be associated with the remastered version. "It was all very strange. One minute I'm a soldier on the run, the next I'm meeting the Beatles and bumping into actors like Peter O'Toole. All that and I was being paid £50 an hour 30 years ago. It was brilliant."

Update (9/23/99) Bill King tells us that the YS CD entered the Billboard charts at number 15. For the official list, look here.

    Update (9/16/99)

"I've just heard from MGM that there are 3 more theaters which will be showing "Yellow Submarine," with even more to come. All of these feature DTS Stereo, so you'll be able to watch the film and hear the Surround soundtrack:

    • --Sacramento, CA - The Crest - 9/17 thru 9/22
    • --Irving, TX - MacArthur Marketplace - 9/17 thru 9/23
    • --Baltimore, MD - The Senator - 9/17 thru 9/23

Update (9/15/99) Several retailers are offering promotions for early purchases of "Yellow Submarine" and Beatle items. Best Buy is offering a reproduction of the original theatrical poster (limited number per store). The Wherehouse is offering an inflatable submarine with the purchase of two Beatle items. Circuit City is offering a mouse pad, while Tower has a pin. Also, Mitch McGeary's Song, Pictures and Stories of the Beatles website's Yellow Submarine page has a price guide for YS collectibles. (Thanks, Mitch!). And Shawn Ryan sent us this link where you can purchase YS animation cells. (Thanks, Shawn!)

Update (9/13/99) Regarding the item below about "Good Morning America," Matt says the first 200-300 who show up (no definite number) may be invited into the studio to sing "All You Need Is Love" with First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Update (9/11/99) Some news from Matt Hurwitz of Good Day Sunshine (thanks, Matt!):

ABC's "Good Morning America" will be helping to celebrate the re-launch of "Yellow Submarine" on Tuesday morning September 14. The Harlem Gospel Choir will be there at ABC's new Times Square studio in New York, to sing "All You Need Is Love." The show will be broadcast on the Times Square JumboTron, and you're welcome to come and join in and sing along down on the plaza. There'll be Yellow Submarine prizes to be given away, and you may even find yourself singing along with First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, who will also be a guest on that morning's show! (If you can't make it, be sure and tune in and sing along at home!)

And Allan Kozinn of the New York Times has written an excellent article on the restoration of "Yellow Submarine," both audio and video, at http://www.nytimes.com/yr/mo/day/news/arts/beatles-yellowsub-film.html.
Also, you'll find video and audio clips from the movie and the Songtrack, in Real Video and Microsoft Media Player formats, at http://www.foreigntv.com/ and http://www.foreigntv.com/music/. (Thanks to Dave Persails and heinekein.)

Update (9/10/99) We hadn't seen any report on one, but apparently there will be a laserdisc version of "Yellow Submarine." List price is $29.95, though the street price will be certainly lower.

Update (9/7/99) Capitol Records has put up a neat little graphics oriented promo for YS at http://www.hollywoodandvine.com/yellowsubmarine. (Thanks to Scott and Tim Swaddling.)

Update (9/3/99) Lots of news today: First, for you New Yorkers, Liverpool, the band who performs at every Beatlefest, will perform a free concert at 11 a.m. Sept. 14 at the Wiz record store at New York's Union Square between 15th & 16th Streets in Manhattan, at the Carle Place, Long Island store at 7:00 p.m. Sept. 16th and at the Garden State Plaza store in Paramus at 1 p.m. Sept. 18. The group will perform most of the "Yellow Submarine Songtrack" live. (Thanks, Tara!) Secondly, Sarah Jones tells us that British Airways is showing the new version of "Yellow Submarine" on its flights from the UK during the month of September. She says they have a 2-hour audio program that includes interviews with George, Paul and Ringo among others on the making of the original and the renovation. The BA in-flight magazine this month also features an article on the film and its renovation. (Thanks, Sarah!) Also, there's a well-written analysis of YS at Salon Magazine. (Thanks to Anita Monga at the Castro Theater, which is playing the movie in the San Francisco Bay Area. Don't miss it!)

Update (9/2/99) There's a superb article on the remixing and remastering of the movie and CD at http://www.mixonline.com/current/1999/features/09yellowsubmarine.html.

Update (8/30/99) Tickets to the Chicago Music Box Theater screenings of "Yellow Submarine" are available by clicking here. (Note: Handling charges are added to ticket purchases.) (Thanks to Sheryl Keib.)

Update (8/25/99) We had the privilege of seeing "Yellow Submarine" on the big screen this week and we strongly suggest that if it's playing in your city, go see it. Hearing the remixes in a theater is an incredible experience. Our favorites were "Only a Northern Song," "It's All Too Much" and "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," but all of them sound tremendous. The stereo separation on some of the tracks is simply stunning.

Here's a press release for the re-release of the video and the theater engagements (the dates are already listed in our Beatle Calendar of Events):

    Film Synopsis

The Beatles psychedelic voyage aboard their fantastic Yellow Submarine is the legendary rock group's only full-length, animated feature of wildly colorful and imaginative fantasia. The adventure begins in Pepperland, where the despicable Blue Meanies have declared war on all that is good -- especially music. The Fab Four vow to save the day with some tuneful ammunition of their own, including Beatles classics "Nowhere Man," "When I'm Sixty Four," and of course, the title song.

    Yellow Submarine Special Edition DVD

The Yellow Submarine widescreen DVD includes a behind-the-scenes featurette, audio commentary, music-only track, video and audio interviews with the filmmakers, behind-the-scenes photos, and three storyboard sequences including two that were not featured in the film, among other added-value elements.

And Tim Brent's Yellow Submarine site has scans of the CD Window Slick and the Capitol Records Catalog. (Thanks, Tim!)

(Update 8/16/99) Saturday, Britain's Express newspaper had an interview with Paul (quoted most), George and Ringo about the remastering of YS. Paul says they originally had hoped YS would be a Disney-type film. "When they said they wanted to do an animated feature film I was excited because I'm a major Disney fan. I really think it's high art. I told them we'd just got a song, "Yellow Submarine," which I'd written for Ringo; very childrensy, but it could be great. I saw it realistically, a story about this old sea captain. But what they were seeing was where we were up to, which was Sgt Pepper time. They saw us getting all psychedelic and thought this is the sort of film we'll make." Says Paul, "I thought it would have worked better with a bit of Disney depth. But it has a sort of trippiness that looks quite nice now. It's dotty. It most definitely is a piece of its time, you can't escape the fact that it is very innovative." Paul denies YS was meant to be a drug song. "I knew the song would get connotations, but it really was only a children's song. I wrote it one night as I was just drifting off to sleep. I thought of images and the colour yellow came to me and a submarine came to me and I thought, 'That's kind of nice; like a toy, a very childish yellow submarine.' " About the audio remixes, Paul says, ""The sound is brilliant and the music very fresh. When they first made 'Yellow Submarine,' you didn't have things like Surroundsound, so it was kind of flat. But they've taken advantage of modern techniques and it sounds good. On 'Eleanor Rigby,' it sounds like you're in the string quartet."

One other piece of news: We've been told that audio versions of the YS remixes are already circulating.

Update (8/12/99) Matt Hurwitz of Good Day Sunshine tells us a digipak promo CD sampler for the reissued "Yellow Submarine" containing four songs -- "Hey Bulldog", "Yellow Submarine", "Eleanor Rigby" and "It's All Too Much" -- will ship on Aug. 19.

Update (8/7/99) Brad K. Adams has interviewed John Clive, who did John's voice in the movie. You can find his very interesting interview at http://oak.cats.ohiou.edu/~ms538596/ and click on "Feature Presentation." (Thanks, Brad!)

Update (8/4/99) Here's a report by Good Day Sunshine's Matt Hurwitz of a press screening of the new "Yellow Submarine":

    Hi, all--

I've just returned from a screening of "Yellow Submarine" at MGM's screening theater here in Los Angeles. They showed me the entire film, in Dolby 5.1 Surround, in some spots switching back and forth between the new print and an original print, with its old mono soundtrack. Needless to say, it was like black and white (or should I say "blue" and white).

I had forgotten what a truly wonderful film this was. It's completely entertaining from beginning to end. And for those of us who grew up in the 60's, it brings back that amazing feeling of creativity and freedom that, for the most part, came whenever a new Beatles project was released.

Besides the sharp images and bright colors (one can see the brush strokes on some of the cels in spots, it's that clean), the real highlight is the Surround sound mix. In the beginning, one hears the crowd of Pepperlanders rushing past you, trying to escape the Blue Meanies. The Glove emits a great roar and flies about the theater. And as the Yellow Submarine takes off with Old Fred to find help, it too flies behind and around the viewer.

But the real treat is hearing The Beatles' music in Surround. During "Yellow Submarine," John's "A life of ease. . . " bits seem to come from everywhere, as do the effects sounds in the song. During "All Together Now," you'll feel like you're part of the crowd, singing along with the chorus on all sides in a full theater (there were only four of us watching this screening, but it still seemed like the theater was full!). And, most amazing, was to hear "Only a Northern Song" in, not just true stereo for the first time, but in Surround, the glascenda (that tinkling percussion instrument heard throughout) clearly separated in the back, with each band member's instrument nice and clear. Just amazing.

And, of course, to finally get to see (and hear) "Hey Bulldog" in all its glory was terrific.

"Yellow Submarine" will be shown in *nine* theaters around the country, shortly before MGM's release of the video and DVD on September 14.

These theaters are (current dates from MGM as of today): --Boston: The Brattle - 9/1 to 9/9
    --Seattle: The Egyptian - 9/1 to 9/16
--Los Angeles: The Nuart - 9/3 to 9/9
--San Diego: The Ken - 9/3 to 9/9
--San Francisco: The Castro - 9/3 to 9/15
    --Minneapolis: The Uptown - 9/3 to 9/9
    --Denver: The Esquire - 9/10 to 9/17
--New York: The Union Square - 9/10 to 9/17
--Chicago: The Music Box - 9/10 to 9/16

The digital Surround soundtrack is, of course, available on the DVD, if one has a home theater. But, as someone who's seen it in a theater, I can tell you, it's nothing short of a crime for MGM to have done all of this work to bring this classic film back to life, and have so few of us see it on the big screen where it belongs. Most people don't have or can't afford to purchase home theater equipment, so for the most part, the great amount of the effort and months of work on the film will go unnoticed by those of us who will be watching it on, at best, a 20" television screen.

MGM still needs to hear from each of you who want to be able to see "Yellow Submarine" at a theater near you (or, perhaps more importantly, to share it with your kids who never saw it). If you would like to have "Yellow Submarine" come to your town, please write me a letter or e-mail - addressed to "Dear MGM" (not written to GDS, in other words), and I will personally deliver it to the appropriate executives at MGM. Let them know how much it means to you to see it on a big screen and enjoy it the way it was meant to be seen. It's still not too late to get it out there.

And here's Capitol's press release for YS, issued Monday:

    Attention Beatles Fans!!

THE WORLD PREMIERE of the new Yellow Submarine movie will be screened in Liverpool in August - as part of a huge Yellow Submarine festival for more than 100,000 fans. Liverpool Council is to declare Bank Holiday Monday, August 30th, Yellow Submarine Day - as the city centre turns yellow for 24 hours. Organisers Cavern City Tours say they expect fans from 35 countries to attend the event, which will be staged to the sound of 180 bands singing Beatles songs in the city.

More than 40 sound stages for bands will be built in pubs, clubs and restaurants all over Liverpool. Major streets in the city centre will be closed to traffic as five other large sound stages - including a huge Yellow Submarine stage in front of the Town Hall - are being built for an open-air blitz of Beatles songs. As part of the day some of the biggest names from the contemporary pop scene will perform for an audience of 40,000 at a concert at Pier Head to mark the 25th birthday of the Liverpool radio station Radio City. The concert will also feature an impressive tribute to The Beatles and Yellow Submarine.

The climax of the day will be the first public screening of the newly- restored Yellow Submarine movie. The new movie has been especially enhanced and visually renovated and will be screened with 5.1 Surroundsound at The Philharmonic Hall. The new version of Yellow Submarine, which has not been seen theatrically since The Sixties, also includes footage cut from the original 1968 film. "The new movie looks and sounds as it has never been seen and heard before", said a spokesman.

Mike Storey, Leader of Liverpool City Council, said: "We are very proud and excited about welcoming the world to this annual celebration of The Beatles and their music. Mr. Storey added: "Thirty years ago, through Yellow Submarine , The Beatles sent a message of peace and love around the globe. Now, in the last summer of 1,000 years, Liverpool is ready to be part of relaunching that positive message through Yellow Submarine Day".

The Liverpool premiere of Yellow Submarine will precede the worldwide release of the Beatles movie on home video and DVD (release date: September 14th).

Alongside the home video and DVD release will be the launch of a new Yellow Submarine album. The new album (release date - September 14th) features 15 Beatles songs from the film - the first time that all the Beatles songs from the movie have been released on one album. Also for the first time, all the songs on the new album have been digitally remastered and remixed.

"The original Yellow Submarine soundtrack featured just six Beatles songs and the rest of the album was orchestral music from the movie performed by George Martinís orchestra. However, the new Yellow Submarine songtrack will contain 15 Beatles songs - it's the trippiest Beatles album ever and it is just what the fans have been asking for for 30 years", said a spokesman.

THIRTY YEARS after it first set sail through Seas of Holes and Time and Nowhere to save the world from Blue Meanies, The Beatles are relaunching their Yellow Submarine - as you've never heard it before.

The Beatles are to release a new Yellow Submarine album - different from the soundtrack of the voyage that was sailed in the Sixties. The new Yellow Submarine songtrack is the new Beatles album that fans have been asking for since 1969.

For the first time fans are to get a chance to hear 15 of The Beatles songs that featured in the movie - and hear them as they've not been heard before as the entire songtrack has been not only digitally remastered but also remixed..

The original Yellow Submarine soundtrack of 1969 included just six Beatles songs - the other half of that album featured music from the movie performed by the George Martin Orchestra.

The new album features: "Yellow Submarine," "Hey Bulldog," "Eleanor Rigby," "Love You To," "All Together Now," "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds," "Think For Yourself," "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," "With A Little Help From My Friends," "Baby You're A Rich Man," "Only A Northern Song," "All You Need Is Love," "When I'm 64," "Nowhere Man," "It's All Too Much."

The new Yellow Submarine songtrack - released by Parlophone & Capitol Records - will surface in record stores on September 14th. All aboard for the trip of your life.

Update (7/12/99) You'll see a very neat Quicktime clip from YS on the Blockbuster site. Go to http://www.blockbuster.com/video/url.tin?page=/video/search.tin and write in Yellow Submarine. (Thanks to Scott Goolsby)

Update (7/14/99): Click here for a press release issued by the Yellow Submarine press office . (Thanks to Matt Hurwitz of Good Day Sunshine for providing it!).

Update (7/8/99) The Swedish band Lenny Pane tells us they'll be among those playing at the Liverpool festival.

Update (6/12/99) In an interview with Sonicnet Music of the World, Beatle publicist Geoff Baker revealed there is no new Beatle song on the way. He said his initial report was due to misinformation. He refused to say why he persisted with the report over the past month, but said his initial comments had been misinterpreted by journalists filled with "wishful enthusiasm." (Thanks to Bob Dunn.)

Update (6/7/99) Some news sent by Matt Hurwitz of Good Day Sunshine (thanks, Matt!):

    Hi, all--

Apple released the following statement today regarding the confusion over a new Beatles single mentioned in the press several weeks ago:

In order to prevent confusion over conflicting reports that a new Beatles single may be issued from the forthcoming "Yellow Submarine" release, media are advised of the following:

In researching the "Yellow Submarine" projects, Apple Corps has discovered previously-unknown footage of The Beatles recording at Abbey Road Studios. it is believed to be the last unseen footage of The Beatles recording.

The footage captures The Beatles recording "Hey Bulldog," a lesser-known song from the "Yellow Submarine" sessions in 1968. The footage was discovered after the screening of "The Beatles Anthology" in 1995. If it had been discovered before, it would have been included in the "Anthology."

The Beatles' recording of "Hey Bulldog" will be issued as a video around the time of the launch of the new "Yellow Submarine" album, home video and DVD in the autumn. EMI Records recently considered issuing "Hey Bulldog" as a new single, but it has now been decided to release the historic footage as a video instead.

Update (5/13/99) More info: AP reports that the remastered album will not include the George Martin instrumentals from the original release. If you're wondering whether the original album is going out of print, Matt Hurwitz of Good Day Sunshine tells us it won't be and that both CDs will be on the shelves. Meanwhile, Beatles spokesman Geoff Baker told MTV Radio Network that though the song is one fans may have heard before, no one will be familiar with this version. He says he song came to light as Paul, George and Ringo were working on the music for the new version of "Yellow Submarine." He didn't name it, but gave a hint: "Nothing is real." Baker said the film will be "more psychedelic" and will include footage not seen in the U.S. The album and movie will be issued in September. Matt Hurwitz tells us the album's title is "Yellow Submarine Songtrack." (You can see a track list of the remastered YS album at Mitch McGeary's "Songs, Pictures and Stories of the Fabulous Beatles" web site.) And Baker also says another Beatle announcement is coming next week! (Thanks to Matt Hurwitz, Ben Okuly and John Metzger.)

Update (5/12/99) Charles E. Moore sent us a very interesting email about a cover version of "Hey Bulldog" with an extra verse recorded by the group Fanny. In part, he says,

Fanny's "Fanny Hill" album, which was recorded at Apple Studios on December 4-18, 1971, includes "Hey Bulldog." The album was produced by Richard Perry and engineered, in part, by Geoff Emerick. Their 3:56 version includes an extra verse which is not in the Beatles version. Is it possible, then, that the current Beatles version of "Hey Bulldog" is a shortened version of the original take? If so, a new, unedited version would indeed be "unreleased," and The Sun's comment that the track would be released in its "original" form would mean its original unedited form. For your reference, the extra verse on Fanny's version of "Hey Bulldog" sounds like:
    Hedgehog grubbing in the sand,
    Leapfrog giving him a hand.
Some kind of attitude is measured out inside.
You think you're going, but you haven't got a ride.
Thanks for listening, and keep up the good work.

Given those lyrics, it sounds like Fanny made up the verse themselves. If anyone knows more, we'd be glad to post it.

(Update 5/11/99) Not much more to add to what we've already reported. The biggest question is, obviously, about the song itself and in what form it'll be released. Will it be an outtake or the master take? Remember, the YS soundtrack is being remixed, therefore the song could sound different, but be the same take. Is that an outtake? We'll leave that to you to decide.

(Update 2 -- 5/10/99) An additional story on Excite has some further details. It says the song is an outtake from the film and "is to be released in its original form." "It's an upbeat thing, a real rocker," said a spokesman. That (and the Lennon vocal) would seem to point to "Hey Bulldog." Another reason in "Bulldog's" favor is that "Hey Bulldog" was included in the British release of the film, but not the American release. The release of the song, especially an outtake, would make an additional (and excellent) marketing point for the movie. Additionally, that song title was also mentioned by a source as one being discussed. The Excite story is at http://www.excite.co.uk/entertainment/news_story/entertainment/ents1.txt. In a followup story from Reuters, spokesman Geoff Baker said this about the song, ``It's all from the 'Yellow Submarine' sessions. John is singing on it. It is not a 'Free As A Bird' job. It is something that is already there. It's good stuff.'' He also discussed the reissue of the album. ``They have redone the album. This is the first time a Beatles album has been remixed,'' Baker said. ``It is being re-edited in a re-fabbed way.'' There will be tons of ``Yellow Submarine'' merchandise in stores. ``Basically everything that is yellow,'' Baker said. ``The whole project should be the trip of our life.'' The story also says the city of Liverpool is planning a Beatles tribute concert this summer with headliners to possibly include Boyzone and Robbie Williams. That story is at http://dailynews.yahoo.com/headlines/re/story.html?s=v/nm/19990510/re/britain_beatles_3.html.
(UPDATE 5/10/99) Our initial skepticism has been tempered a bit after seeing the BBC news site's version of the story. It says the unreleased song will probably come from the "Yellow Submarine" sessions and the whole thing will be tied in with the YS reissue. It'll be released this autumn. The BBC also confirms for the first time that the YS album is being remixed. You can find the BBC story by clicking here. The British tabloid the Sun carried the original report that the Beatles are planning to release a final group single this year following the unearthing of a track supposedly lost during 1968 studio sessions, according to Reuters. The unnamed song, with a Lennon vocal, will be released in its original form and was called "the centerpiece of a Beatles' revival in the run-up to the millennium," the report said. "No new work has been done on it but Paul, George and Ringo have said this will be the last ever Beatles single -- there's nothing else left...It's a perfect way to end the millennium and it's sure to be a number one,'' Reuters quoted an unidentified source "close to the group" as saying. The paper also said the surviving Beatles were planning a concert with current star acts, include, it was rumored, Robbie Williams and Boyzone. The surviving Beatles previously issued a press release saying "Real Love" would be the last song issued under the Beatles name. (Thanks to Beatles999 and Richard Eckman.)

Update (4/27/99) Brad Harvey of the Beatles Video Digest says an article about the new YS appears in their next issue going to the printer this week. He say the advance videotape that Shorten spoke of was taken from an advance DVD with time code and "Property of MGM/UA" keyed over the bottom of the letterboxed picture.

Update (4/25/99) The 910's Steve Shorten has obtained an advance videotape of the remastered "Yellow Submarine." In a first post to rec.music.beatles, he said, "In addition to including the long-fabled "Hey Bulldog" sequence, other missing footage including missing bits and dialogue from the "All You Need Is Love" and "Baby You're A Rich Man" scenes that were discussed in my article for The 910 years ago have been reincorporated (and from the looks of things in some cases recreated from scratch)." But in a later post, Steve noted, "In restoring all of this footage to the film, the restoration team did the semi-unthinkable: they DELETED a nice large chunk of footage: the entire "Beatles to Battle" sequence (the part with the jazzy music underscore). Also missing is a line of Jeremy's dialog: "Ad hoc, ad loc and quid pro quo, I've got to study, let me go!" He also said, "The new version of the film contains a new closing credits sequence (which removes the "birds chirping" ending) that details the restoration work" and that all the film's dialog and music were been remixed in 24-bit stereo. There's additional information in Steve's post, which you'll find in rmb under the heading "Yellow Submarine: Exciting News." (We thank Steve for letting us quote him.)

Update (1/29/99) We've heard that one of the participants in the Newseum webcast this week revealed that YS will be reissued around Labor Day, first to theaters, then on video. (Thanks to Barbara Krauss.)

Update (11/14/98) : In its Nov. 20 issue (we haven't seen it yet, but have read posts and received email about it), Entertainment Weekly confirms much of what we told you way back in March: that "Yellow Submarine" will get a limited theater reissue, that the soundtrack (they say it will be expanded) will be reissued, and that a number of "Yellow Submarine" inspired products will be on the market next year. But remember, you read it here first.

Update (9/3/98): Some news from Matt Hurwitz, publisher of Good Day Sunshine (thanks, Matt!):

Hi, all-- I've spoken recently with Apple in London regarding the upcoming reissue of "Yellow Submarine." This newly-restored version of the film, complete with newly remixed 6-track digital sound, will likely be released, at the very least on home video. At present, however, Apple and MGM, who will be releasing the picture, haven't made a final decision about whether the film will be released theatrically, where it can be seen on the big screen, as it was originally meant to be, and with its new soundtrack available for a full "Yellow" experience.

If you'd like to see the film released to a theater near you, you might want to drop Apple and MGM a note and let them know how much seeing "Yellow Submarine" at the movies would mean to you. They need to know what the fans want and how much you appreciate this important film.

Update (4/1/98) Another source tells us that George and Paul have seen part of the remastering and approved, and that "Hey Bulldog" will definitely be included in the reissue.

(3/18/98) A source tells us that Sony Signatures, which holds the official Beatle merchandise licensing agreements, is preparing a campaign around "Yellow Submarine." Plans call for a remastered and reissued CD, the movie reissued on video (and possibly in a limited theater run), along with a merchandising campaign. However, our source says none of this will take place this year -- during the 30th anniversary of "Yellow Submarine" -- but at the earliest in 1999.

Update (9/18/99) More info on the figurines is at http://209.197.117.27/databases/action.cgi?setup_file=fignews2.setup&category=actionfigures&topic=31&show_article=47. It says they've been delayed, but you can see more images. (Thanks to Sean Roper.)

Update (9/17/99) The U.S. Postal Service release about the YS stamp:

Post Office to Unveil New 'Beatles Yellow Submarine' Stamp This Fri. Sept. 17, at Denver Hard Rock Cafe

DENVER, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Hey Denver! If you're a fan of the "Fab Four," stop by the Denver Hard Rock Cafe or your local post office this Friday, Sept. 17th. The Beatles new "Yellow Submarine" stamp is going on sale for the first time nationwide, as part of 15 popular stamps honoring the 1960s, as voted on by the American public. (See other stamps below.)

Denver Postmaster Mike Flores will unveil the new 33-cent Beatles "Yellow Submarine" stamp this Friday, Sept. 17, at the Denver Hard Rock Cafe, downtown at the Denver Pavilions Mall at 16th and Glenarm. The ceremony will start at 11:15 a.m. inside the Hard Rock by the Beatles display. There will be other activities including Beatles music and contests, the "Yellow Submarine" stamp and a special Denver souvenir postmark, etc.

At the Hard Rock from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. this Friday only, and at all post offices starting Sept. 17, the "Yellow Submarine" stamp and all 15 of the 1960s "Celebrate The Century" stamp series will be available for the first time.

Besides the "Yellow Submarine" stamp, the 1960 stamp subjects to be available Sept. 17 include: "Star Trek"; "Woodstock"; "I Have a Dream"; Man Walks on the Moon; The Integrated Circuit; Lasers; The Vietnam War; the Peace Symbol; The Peace Corps; Super Bowl I; Green Bay Packers; Roger Maris, 61 in '61; Ford Mustang; and the Barbie Doll.

"We invite everyone to join us and help salute the Fab Four and the new 'Yellow Submarine' stamp at the Hard Rock," says Denver Postmaster Mike Flores. "It's a fact the Beatles are one of the greatest musical groups of all time. During the '60s, the Beatles influenced virtually everyone. They dominated the worlds of music, fashion, entertainment, and pop culture for millions of people around the globe. Their music is still very popular worldwide."

The Beatles were selected by Americans during nationwide balloting in May 1998, as one of 15 top popular stamp subjects saluting the 1960s. The Postal Service is honoring the famous people, places, events and trends of each decade of the 20th Century by issuing 15 stamps for each decade (150 stamps total). It's called the "Celebrate The Century" stamp program. The American public voted on the popular stamp subjects for the last 50 years of the century. The stamps of the 1900s-1950s are available now.

The Denver Post Office will also provide a first day special postmark at the "Yellow Submarine" stamp unveiling ceremony at the Hard Rock.

Update (9/9/99) The Eurostar YS train has begun its run in Europe, the AP and Reuters report. The train, decorated with images from the film, pulled out of London's Waterloo station for its inaugural trip under the English Channel to Paris. It will run three times a day between London, Paris and Brussels until December. You can find a report by clicking here. The BBC site has a report and a picture.

Also, a report from Jorge Bernardo on YS in Washington, D.C. (thanks, Jorge!):

Just a quick note on last night's gala event at Uptown Theater in Washington, D.C. They rolled out the red carpet for the Postmaster and MGM Vice President, Bruce Marco, as USPS and MGM presented the restored version of "Yellow Submarine" at the old Uptown Theater. At the same time, the Beatles postage stamp was unveiled.

It was an invitation-only event for which the local oldies station gave away a few dozen tickets, with others distributed through word-of-mouth, it seemed. In the end, no one was turned away at the door, yet the theater was at least a third EMPTY.

At least that gave me the opportunity to meet Mr. Marco (who spearheaded the restoration project after watching a video of the film with his 9-year-old daughter in 1995) who I thanked for bringing the film to Washington if only for a single screening. I asked him if MGM had given consideration to doing a wide release. He told me that, in spite of his belief that the film could perform well in theaters, the studio decided it wasn't a good business decision.

He also urged everyone to go out and buy DVD players (if we didn't have them already) to experience the incredible sights and sounds which "Yellow Submarine" delivers. (He admitted to me that he hopes it will become the biggest-selling DVD disc ever!)

As far as the actual film goes, I think everyone was tremendously impressed with it, as was I. Though I had a Yellow Submarine lunchbox when I was a kid and even remember nightmares of Blue Meanies, I hadn't seen the movie in 25 years! It's unfortunate that not everyone will have the opportunity to see it on the big screen.

As for the stamp, it may be a good cross-promotion with the film and Postal Service, but it's pretty dull-looking, if you ask me.

Also, a report from bjpoling on YS in Minneapolis (thanks!):

I saw Y.S. this weekend. Wow! Barely a speck of dirt on the thing, absolutely awesome condition. I wish however I'd been at a more modern theatre. I saw it at the Uptown in Minneapolis, which is a nice "restored" house showing classier limited showings of films and indeed had the fancy sound system going, but also suffered a bit from big screen boominess and echo. Sometimes the dialogue was a bit hard to make out because you were so overwhelmed at the songs new mixes but all in all a five-star effort. It would be nice to screen this on a really well put together DVD home set up so you could toy with the mixes a bit, but boy what a treat regardless. I'm glad Minneapolis was one of the chosen few to get it and curse the fools who snobbishly passed it up in this town. They don't know what they missed the we too hip airheads we have here! I came, I saw, I blown away!! Paul in Mpls

Also, a special limited edition figurine will be included in the initial production run of the YS figures when released by McFarlane Toys. The figures being released are John and Jeremy; Paul with Glove; George with Yellow Submarine; Ringo with Blue Meanie and the limited edition George with "Captain" Old Fred. (Thanks to Mike A.)

Update (9/4/99) Fans from all over the world came to Liverpool for a week of Beatle events. Sir George Martin and Neil Aspinall attended the sold-out premiere of "Yellow Submarine" on Aug. 30. An international array of tribute bands played Beatle songs. (We'd love to hear from you if you played.) Notably, this was the first time Apple lent their support to the event.

Update (9/1/99) Other reports are at Sky News and at CBS News. (Thanks to Steve Frank.)

Update (8/31/99) You'll find a report on the festival at http://www.excite.co.uk/entertainment/news_story/entertainment/ents7.txt.

Update (8/22/99) Not surprisingly, YS stuff is already popping up on Ebay. Besides records and CDs, YS figures, banks, lunch boxes, pins, pictures and plates were some of the items we saw. (Thanks to Beatles999.)

Update (8/16/99) A note from Matt Hurwitz of Good Day Sunshine (thanks, Matt!):

    Hi, all--

You may have heard about Apple's painting the Eurostar/English Channel Tunnel train being painted yellow. Well, it will be a lot more than just a new color: I've been told the train will feature 400 meters of full-color decal material, featuring Yellow Submarine characters, depicting all 15 songs on Apple's upcoming "Yellow Submarine Songtrack" album, to be released alongside the "Yellow Submarine" home video and DVD release on September 14. Certainly THE way to travel "beneath the waves"!

Matt Hurwitz, Publisher, Good Day Sunshine Magazine

Frank Cukerman gives us the following information about the YS train (thanks, Frank!):

From the 8th of September : train number 9024 from London-Waterloo 11:57 AM to Paris-Gare du Nord 03:57 PM train number 9047 from Paris-Gare du nord 05:10 PM to London-Waterloo 07:13 PM The train will be painted for 3 months...

Capitol Record's "Yellow Submarine" press kit lists an incredible number of YS items. Some of the more esoteric: baby bibs, fabric playmats, alarm clocks, squishy keychains, hand-held toys, Quiksilver snowboarding wear, surf wear, backpacks, snowboards and sunglasses, boxer shorts, tea pot and cup sets, mini disc holders, cell phone ringer lights (a notation next to that says "must have"), 3-D mugs, bookends, finger puppets and comics. And that's only a partial list.

Update (8/9/99) EMI Canada is sponsoring a Yellow Submarine contest. Grand prize is a trip to London for the upcoming YS festival. The URL is http://www.emicanada.com/artists/yellow_sub/yellow_sub.html.

Update (8/7/99) Animation cels from YS will be availalble through American Royal Arts' website. (Thanks very much to Rob Masterson.)

Update (8/6/99) You'd think after the flap over the "Yellow Submarine" cruise that the Fabs wouldn't consider something similar, but it appears they may have. A Eurostar train is to be redecorated like a yellow submarine beginning Sept. 8, reports the BBC. The train is to be covered with plastic panels painted with cartoon images. The cost: £100,000 ($160,000), reports the BBC. One report we saw said the three surviving Fabs will make the train ride themselves, but we doubt that's true. (Thanks to Jeffrey Ross, Bill Evenson.)

Update (8/4/99) The Ralph Marlin site now has the Yellow Submarine ties and boxers. Go to http://www.ralphmarlin.com/products/neckties/index.html and do a product search for Yellow Submarine. (Thanks to Bill Hess.) Also, Bud and Jean Loveall of LuckyFace Collectibles tells us the YS cards have been delayed yet again to mid- to late September. The reason given is that there are continued delays in getting approval from Apple and Signatures Network, Ltd. (the new name for what was formerly called Sony Signatures). (Thanks, Bud and Jean.)

Update (8/3/99) A correction to an earlier item: The Castro Theater engagement of YS runs from Sept. 3-15.

Update (7/31/99) A picture of the new YS model can be found at http://www.modelroundup.com/mcnews.html and http://www.modelroundup.com/images/yelsub.jpg. The price is listed as $8.80 (w/$5.50 shipping), and is kit number AMT-30097. (Thanks to Mike Carpenter.) Also, JPerry tells us the cards are now due sometime in September. Also, the word from Dark Horse Comics (!) is that they are hoping for a December release of the Yellow Sub comic book. (Thanks to Beatles999.)

Update (7/28/99) More pictures of the McFarlane toys at http://www.toymania.com/news/toyfair99/mctoys/index.shtml. (Thanks to Dan of the BCRC.)

Update (7/22/99) Some info on the Liverpool celebration for Yellow Submarine from Jean in Liverpool (thanks, Jean!):

There is going to be a yellow sub sailing up and down the Mersey during the Convention. (Unfortunately G, P and R will NOT be sailing with it - aahh!!). The Sub is being painted as we speak and it's in the docks at the moment.

There will be a huge Yellow Sub stage built in front of the Town Hall and all the bands will play on this stage. The buildings in town will be floodlite yellow and the sky is also going to be yellow (with the aid of lighting).

As you know, the premiere is going to be in Liverpool at the Philharmonic Hall (place of Paul's Oratorio/Standing Stone successes). Lenny Pane (from Sweden) have been given permission by Apple to recreate the Yellow Sub Album and will be playing the whole thing directly after the showing of the film.

And for more info on the Yellow Submarine figures, go to http://www.figures.com and click on news. (Thanks to JPerry910).

Update (7/21/99) Mitch McGeary tells us his website now contains a photo of the video promo box and the very first trade ad (double-page) announcing YS to retailers with all the info. (Thanks, Mitch!).

    Update (7/17/99)

A picture of the George figure. (Thanks, Dan!)

Also, a pic of the YS toys. (Thanks, Mike!)

Also, you can learn more about Lenny Pane's upcoming gig at the Yellow Submarine festival at http://www.softronic.se/lennypane/indexeng.html. (Thanks to Bengt Waärmlind, Sweden.

Update (7/15/99) Two articles on the reissue of YS: http://www.awn.com/mag/issue3.4/3.4pages/3.4cohen.html and http://www.awn.com/mag/issue3.4/3.4pages/3.4creators.html.

Update (7/4/99) Bud and Jean Loveall at Lucky Face Collectibles tell us the YS cards have been delayed to mid-August. Some information about the card set, that will also feature a binder (with thanks to Bud and Jean):

There will be one box design and one 7 card pack design. There will be no "jumbo" or "value" packs. There will be six different chromium chase cards, packaged zero to three per box (average of two per box). There also will be a full size (9 in. By 12 in.) binder to hold the 72 card base set. Included will be the 9 pocket protectors to hold the cards. Manufacturers suggested retail price for the binder is $19.95. Though we did not see the design of the binder it was described to us as a black binder with the Yellow Submarine on the front and the four Beatles on the back.

The design for the binder is also waiting for approval, so there may be delays on it, as well. In addition, the binders are being shipped from a different factory than the cards, so they may arrive at a different time than the cards.

And what's described as an original motorized YS display can be seen at http://www.vinylfrontier.com/Ysubmarine.htm.

Update (6/4/99) An email from Arno Guzek (Thanks, Arno!):

    Dear Steve,

Just a quick update, please arrange words the way you like. Spoke with my friend that was in London yesterday (june 1st) at abbey road together with 25 others. For a listening party of the upcoming YS. They compared the two versions the old songs by a few seconds of each song and compared these to the new versions. Geoff Baker was present as was Mike Heatley. No words about any new song, well some may know the songs but most won't. It will be released when it's time to!! Dates were given like you already know. No news about red/blue deletions!

Then off to the UIP studios, watching the new version, with extra scenes etc. The story will be about tomorrow I hope and a translation will follow. Tomorrow 3rd there's another listening party, my friend was thus changed to days ahead compared to first plans.

    all the best
    Arno Guzek

Also, a tip that the the "Yellow Submarine" trading cards will possibly be released July 15 or later. A full base set of 72 will be priced at $10 -$12 per set, with 6 chase cards. (Thanks to Dan at The Beatle Collectors' Reference Center.)

Update (6/2/99) Beatlefan magazine reports in its new issue that the movie will be released Sept. 15 in England, Oct. 15 in the U.S. The magazine says the new YS CD will be released Sept. 14.

Update (5/26/99) Liverpool will hold a giant Beatle festival in honor of the reissue of "Yellow Submarine," Reuters reported today. The restored film will get its world premiere Aug. 30, which Liverpool City Council is declaring ``Yellow Submarine Day.'' ``We are very proud and excited about welcoming the world to this unique celebration of The Beatles, their music and their message,'' said city council leader Mike Storey on Tuesday. ``Thirty years ago, through 'Yellow Submarine', The Beatles sent a message of peace and love around the globe. Now in the last summer of 1,000 years, Liverpool is ready to be part of relaunching that message.'' Reuters says the film will be released on video in September along with an album of remastered and remixed songs from the movie. The new print will include footage not originally included in the first release. The story also said "Yellow Submarine" merchandise would flood the stores. (Thanks to Beatles999, Jeff Smuylan,

In addition, Steve Iverson tells us the classic Yellow Submarine model kit is out. He says he got word today from an online hobby shop called Q's Continuum that they are in stock! The shop's website can be found at http://hometown.aol.com/DKEmpire/index.html. (We assume other hobby stores also carry them, so you might want to check in your area.) And, he says, Polar Lights will have four figure kits out later this summer, in August or early September. (Thanks, Steve and direction regionale.)

Reporter Steve Hochman of the Los Angeles Times asked publicist Geoff Baker if the new track will indeed be "Hey Bulldog," as we and others have reported. "I can't really explain it without giving it away. Some people will know the song, some die-hards. But the majority of people will not know it, and nobody will know of this song in the form in which it's coming. As to whether anyone's going to be disappointed, I don't think so. A lot of people will be delighted and surprised. I don't think there will be a hanging party for me in October." ICE, however, confirmed it'll be "Hey Bulldog."

And regarding Baker's clue of "Nothing Is Real," the movie advertising for YS had the phrase "Nothing Is Real" on it. So methinks Baker's was trying to throw us off. Sorry, Geoff, it didn't work. (Thanks to Chuck Englert and Debbie Glienke.)

Update (5/25/99) Some news from Arno Guzek (thanks, Arno!):

    Dear Steve,

Just a quick note from Denmark. Spoke with the biggest paper yesterday Ekstra Bladet here in Denmark, that was coming back from the Cannes Film Festival. They are invited to London June 3rd to the press reception for "Yellow Submarine." Presume that many others will attend.

    All the best,
    Arno Guzek

Update (2/26/99) More news from Steve Iverson (thanks, Steve):

"More Yellow Submarine model news.... In addition to Ertl reissuing the Yellow Submarine kit later this year, another company, Polar Lights will be issuing figure kits of the Beatles from the movie.

The tentative schedule for the models is:
    The Yellow Submarine
    Beatles, figure #1...August/September
    Beatles, Figure #2...Sept/Oct
    Beatles,Figure #3...Oct/Nov
    Beatles, Figure #4...Nov/Dec

No word as to what figure will be first. Dates are tentative and have a tendency to slip.

Polar Lights is a relatively new model company that has had great success reissuing some of the classic Aurora model kits from the sixities. More recently they have been creating new kits, including successful figures kits of the rock group KISS.

    Something to look forward to!"

Update (2/15/99) http://www.tomart.com/toyfair99/mcfyellowsubmarine.html has pics of some of the new McFarlane toys. (Thanks to David Harper.)

Update (2/12/99): Steve Iverson tells us the reissue of the "Yellow Submarine" model kit is official. At left is a pic of it. (Thanks, Steve.)

Update (2/11/99) "Spawn" creator Todd McFarlane plans to market "Yellow Submarine" figures, according to a report on the Good Noise website. Says McFarlane, in part, ""It is the thirtieth anniversary of Yellow Submarine, and, again, I’m looking to diversify some of the product that I have at my company. And not just keep it in the dark crazy vein." And, he says, "there’s not that much cool Beatles product out there." (Thanks to Pete Wehner)

Update (2/2/99) Joe tells us the merchandising has already begun. The Franklin Mint has issued YS bell jars!

Beatle spokesman denies YS cruise rumors (Was "A Beatle reunion?: George, Paul, Ringo reportedly to sail down Mersey for YS promotion"): Update (7/14/99) Beatle spokesman Geoff Baker today categorically denied the story that originated in the UK tabloid the Sunday Mirror that Paul, George and Ringo would cruise down the Mersey River singing "Yellow Submarine" on TV. The story got extensive coverage around the world and was picked up by the New York Post, dotmusic, MSNBC, Canada's National Post, MTV (thanks, John McIntyre!), the Associated Press, Canada's Hamilton Spectator and others. As Baker told music365, "There was a big thing in The New York Post on Monday (July 12) which was inspired by a gossip column item in a British Sunday tabloid, The People, the day before," he said. "I can confidently say there's no truth in it, more confidently than the writer of the original piece. Let's face it, if he truly believed there was anything in it they would have splashed it across the front page, rather than give it a couple of paragraphs on Page 11." However, journalist Terry Ott told us that as of 10:45 EDT Tuesday, the AP reported they could neither confirm nor deny the reunion story and that none of the Beatles themselves would comment.

Here's a note from Good Day Sunshine publisher Matt Hurwitz (thanks, Matt!) with a quote from Baker:

"In case you've been reading about the "Beatles reunion" aboard a yellow-painted submarine during the Yellow Submarine Festival in Liverpool in August, it appears we should file this one in the same place as the other reunion rumors. When queried about its validity a few moments ago, Geoff Baker at Apple responded, "Yeah, that's right. . . and with Elvis playing harmonica."

    In other words - no."

Also, this from MJI Broadcasting's daily news and audio service for classic rock radio, The Classic Daily. (MJI Broadcasting is a leading provider of music new for thousands of U-S stations.) (thanks to Sal Cirrincione!):

    BEATLES ARE NOT REUNITING

Despite yesterday's published reports, The Beatles are not reuniting in conjunction with the re-release of the "Yellow Submarine" album and movie. August 30th is Yellow Submarine Day in the Fab Four's hometown of Liverpool, and it was reported that Paul, George and Ringo would play the title song atop a yellow submarine making its way down the Mersey River. Beatles spokesman Geoff Baker says it's "not true." In a recent interview, Paul told us, "We can spend all year dreaming about [a reunion]. The fact is, we won't be doing it." There was also a rumor that KISS would be playing at the Yellow Submarine festivities, but that is also not true. The album and video will be out on September 14th.

(Thanks to Bob Dunn, Sal Cirrincione, Matt Hurwitz, Terry Ott and John McIntyre.)

Update (7/13/99) Another tabloid, the New York Post, and more interestingly, MSNBC, picked up the story today. However, an email (thanks, MB) we received said "Access Hollywood" broadcast it had gotten denials from Paul and Ringo about the story. I suspect we'll be getting more info on this one.

(7/12/99) The UK tabloid Sunday Mirror reports that George, Paul and Ringo will get together in a cruise down the Mersey River in August to promote the upcoming re-release of "Yellow Submarine." The historic scene will be broadcast live by the UK's Channel 4's "Big Breakfast" on Bank Holiday Monday. The report says the three will have guitars and drums on board. Quoting an unidentified source, "We want to take the Yellow Submarine theme as far as we can. And there's no better way of doing this than getting the three Beatles to appear on a real submarine. They also said they were going to attend the celebrations in Liverpool on the day. But by singing 'Yellow Submarine' they are going to give fans an extra-special treat."
